This is a true story...

A couple weeks ago I was changing the green tube in my own G90. When I had the tube free of the projector, the HV lead swung down and contacted my pants right at the crotch. The tube must not have fully discharged (as is common) and a hefty jolt of HV went right through my pants and hit me square in the nuts. It really really hurt Embarassed

So the moral is watch out for your balls when you carry a tube after removing it from a projector Mr. Green

No way, Craig! That's crazy!

How long had the projector been shut down? I'm just curious how long the tubes retain that kind of potential...

I used to work at a small computer dealer... So, the repair tech was this old guy (to me he was old - probably in his 50's - now, that's not old at all...arrgghhh) Anyway, he was a total geek, shortwave radio, TV, tubes, the works... Very weird, but pretty neat at the same time. Anyway, he used to impress upon me at every opportunity how dangerous the little 9" B/W tubes from the early Macs were. Remember those machines? The little "porthole" Macs? Anyway, one time he showed me... POW! He said, "That'd do the number on your heart, wouldn't it?" It left an impression, alright!

Glad "the boys" are OK!

I think we're all missing the important question here - did you drop the tube?! Very Happy

Glad to hear you're ok Smile

When my vasectomy was done the nurse failed to put the ground plate for the electrocautery knife under my ass. Not only did I get the shot of anesthetic in my sack that felt the sting of a wasp, but when they cut the tubes the jolt went from my nuts to my knees which were in these metal supports attached to the table. The doctor figured out what was wrong about halfway thru the procedure. He thought I was just a pussy until he saw the ground plate hanging on the side of the table. They were extremely apologetic afterward.

I've heard of ball lightning...

In some situations like this, people discover amazing new abilities. I assume nothing happened that lasted over 4 hours. Smile

The projector was not shut down more than 15 minutes as I can change a tube pretty fast in a G90 (may have only been 5 minutes even).

Your old timer story makes a good point. These tubes are supposed to drain off the HV on their own. However, I don't trust them and I always remove the HV lead and ground it directly to the chassis. I had already done a grounding and I still managed to get hit. I really don't understand how it happened as I thought for sure the tube was discharged.

It was not the full wallop that you can get from a fully charged CRT. So I was spared the extreme pain, but it still hurt pretty bad. I wish I had be running a video camera because I probably would have won $10,000 on Americas Funniest Home Videos.

So watch out for you balls and other anatomy when handling a removed tube even if you already grounded it Wink
