|
|
My G70 passed 10,000 hours tonight, interesting to see that the chassis counter keeps going past 10,000 but the CRT counter resets and turns black. Anyone know if the counter will change back to green at 20,000 hours? Or will I have to wait, and see.

At 20,000 hours everything will be black so you won't be able to read it.

No, the image goes black, but the counter is lit.

And just for fun I pulled the lenses and checked the tube condition, surprisingly they look better than I would have expected.
The red has no visible wear, the green is still an honest 7, the blue would be the same but it came to me with 261 hours and uneven wear that 10k hour later still looks the same to me.
I run a contrast of 80, and a brightness of 74, I was really expecting toasted tubes, but surprise, surprise they look like they're good for another 10k

Good grief...I've had my XG almost 1/2 of your life (8 years) and I've only got about 2000 hours on it...You must watch that thing a lot!

Not as much as you would think, I rarely watch more than three movies a week, and sometimes only one a week, more of the hours were racked up while it was running Media Center while I was working on other things, it also gets used as a windows desktop extension, and I have brothers who watch more movies than I do.
And of course the G70 also counts standby hours.
I'd be surprised if I've even watched 200 movies the whole time I've had it.

The G70 counts standby hours?! I keep my projector in standby whenever i'm not using it. Does that mean i have nowhere near the 1600 hours my counter indicates actually on my tubes? How do I fix this?

No, the G70 hour counter does not count "plugged-in" standby hours like the Marquees do... Not sure why Zebu wrote that.
The Sony hour counters reflect power-on hours.

Ah, OK - that makes sense. I can see why you'd bring that up. I've put quite a few hours on my machine while it was muted. Usually, it's because we watch a movie with the kids, then go up to to get them in bed, which takes an hour, then we come back down to watch a movie. I probably have 50 hours on my machine with PIC MUTE on.

Marquee only records power on hours...no clocks are ticking when the machine is plugged in but off. Just the heaters are lit to about 4 volts.

What do "standby" hours refer to then, Ben? I thought that was the whole thing with Marquees in standby - that they racked up standby hours - and that was why some people put them on remote switches to power down the LVPS completely. Am I wrong?

Stand-By on a Marquee is Everything ready to go and powered on, except the tubes are not emitting. It sounds like what the PIC mute does on a sony.
My limited understanding of this is that the LVPS, HVPS,MOBO, are all powered in stand-by and the Video chain VIM, NECKBOARDS, are not powered, so no emissions come from the tubes.
They are goofy buttons, power is power on and off, Stand-by is keeping in ready to project and wasting power for no real reason I can figure. And adds to a great deal of confusion.

OK, so Marquee Standby = Sony Pic Mute. Thanks, Dave. That's the first time anybody has explained it to me so that it made sense. So, Electrohome chose to track hours where the machine was powered on, but not displaying a picture... That actually makes sense, too.
So, there is a power on/off on the remote, though right? It seems like I recall Marquee guys confused about where their projector was really off or not.... Which always confused me, since it seems like it would be pretty apparent whether the machine was actually shut down or not, regardless of whether it was displaying a picture.
Sorry for the topic detour!

Still on the detour. A Marquee remote has a power Button, that is like a Toggle switch. The same button is power on and power off. Stand-by has it's own button, also a toggle like deal. The real problem is that even when turned off, a Marquee has fans that "RUN" on the LVPS.
So it sounds like its on even though it is not. When powered up to display a picture more fans [BELLY FANS] come on that don't make much more noise than when it's off, especially when you have the Tim Martin MODDED LVPS.
That why it's so damn confusing there is ALWAYS a fan running. Those fans run even when powered down correctly which is why allot of people unplug to be really, really, sure the have it OFF.
The power indicator on the back of the machine has 2 lights which cause even more confusion,1 The power light stays on all the time but changes color from amber to green when in project mode. When in stand-by there's another light that comes on in conjunction with the power light to signify stand-by.
So to recap, 1 light is always on that changes color when going from power off to project mode hours counting as CRT's on. 2 lights are on when in stand-by mode, no picture, but still counting hours as stand-by.
So you end up with a counter that counts stand-by hours and CRT on hours separately then adds the together for total on hours.
Stand-by 500 Hours
CRT on 1000 Hours
Total Hours 1500 Hours

Dave has covered it well but just to recap:
Plugged in, power off:
Every other projector: Totally off, maybe a status LED
Marquees: Run the LVPS fans at slow speed, run the heater circuit at about 4v
Plugged in, power on:
Every other projector: All systems on, displays picture
Marquee: All systems on, displays picture
PIC MUTE / STANDBY:
Every other projector: All systems on, no picture
Marquee: All systems on, no picture
The only deviation is when the power is off but the projector is plugged in. I think the theory is that keeping the heaters warm reduces stress on the cathode on startup.
