In the 1970's ( and before ) we had the red/blue 3D glasses for Friday night movies on one of the channels ( NBC maybe? ). Always black and white with the red and blue halo. I remember going to the store and getting my glasses to watch "Creature From the Black Lagoon" when I was a kid.
Before the movie the host of the show instructed you how to properly adjust your color and tint controls for the best effect. Those movie nights lasted into the '80's and occasionally you'll see a TV show do it. Medium did a Twilight Zone style episode in 2006 partly in 3D and most of it was black and white ( the 3D sequences were all B & W ). NBC's "Chuck" did a 3D episode in January 09 that was in color with the red/blue glasses. The Grammy awards did a 3D bit too this year in 2010.
There have been kids cartoons ( Japanese Anime ) that used a polarized type glasses . Unfortunately they caused kids to go into seizures. They were fun to watch, especially when there was allot of fast moving back ground. I used the 3D glasses from the Superbowl half time show from the Rolling Stones in 3D ( ironically I had to drive all over the city to find a 7-11 store that had them. Then I forgot to watch the Superbowl haha ) this was around 1993-1995
I remember back in 1987 we had 3D camcorders. By 1989 they had disappeared. Then in the early to mid '90's we had virtual reality 3D head set's. By 1997 those were gone. replaced by LCD shutter glasses that worked with Nvidia cards on the PC. They promised many 3D games. I remember reading a list of 20-30 but I only every saw 3-4 that were released. You can still buy the glasses but they don't work with LCD monitors. You have to have CRT.
So the 1.4 spec adds 3D to LCD and plasma for mass consumption.
3D won't go away. I like it, it's quirky but I'd hate to see people pay the extra for the HDMI 1.4 spec TV, Bluray player and then find in 3-4 years you have NO new movies for it. Of course if you're in the market for a new TV anyways then the cost may not bother you too much.
I'll be keeping an eye on it too. Well 2 actually, likely clad with some sort of new 3D glasses to see the full effect.
Now, where did we put those 2 thread about the new 3D with CRT's?
