I've recently aquired a Runco 980 Ultra. This has been sitting for quite some time, so I set it up and attempted to converge it. Like a big dummy, I jumped in and stared changing pot settings inside the unit. Still not converged and now it's overheating and shutting down(not sure if it was doing this before I started messing around in there.) I've looked through the manual and there are no complete diagrams detailing what each one are for so I'm looking for some info on how to re-adjust them to the proper positions. Please help. Thanks so much in advance.

Part it out and find another projector....

NEC's are the hardest to "fix" once the pots inside have been fudged with...

I'm with Elaine, sorry! NEC never issued a proper service manual, the one that's available has a bunch of mistakes in it, esp. the calibration section. It would take hours to try and resolve that, and you'd need to send the whole set to a tech for repair.

You can call whatever you like, I've owned 20 plus NEC's I've actually attempted the reference mechanical setup three times, using an oscilloscope, colorimeter, dmm, and the service manual, and a whole day. These were projectors that HADN'T been f*ck*** by someone randomly turning pots, and it was very, very difficult to get good results.

NEC is the only brand of projector that you can basically KILL by screwing with the internal pots just sitting there begging to be turned. If you don't believe me, and you don't believe pretty much the ONLY crt technician left in the world, then randomly twiddle the pots on your own NEC and post on here how well you did in getting it back to working condition...

Forums are FULL of people who post about things they've never actually DONE themselves, the OP got two responses from people who've ACTUALLY DONE what he asked about trying to do, and yet you "poh poh" it...good for you...

as always elaine, you sir and especially curt, are correct. Embarassed i misunderstood, thinking he was dealing with a pj that had no digital adjustment but only pots on a convergence board, thinking how else would you converge it? boy, the egg on my red face is almost done. Razz

do tell, what were the best results you got with an NEC? Did ya like any of them? i only ask as i picked up the 6pg xtra (runco dtv 933) last week and will be changing from ceiling to desktop and new screen size. it has just over 6000 hrs.

Well...the best picture I've ever seen from an NEC was a pristine 10PG with under 2000 hours and everything still factory set, it was RAZOR sharp, bright as hell, and easy as pie to set up. Superb colors too...

The absolute sharpest projector I've ever had(personally) was an XG-852 with pristine tubes, again, everything still factory set...I couldn't use 1080i with it because the scan lines were so well defined they were a distraction at about 13 foot viewing distance...

My personal favorite among all the NEC's is the PG Plus. They are sharp, have great colors, are EASY to set up*(for an NEC) and are VERY quiet, especially compared to anything AFTER them(ie, the Xtra, and all XG's....).

There was a guy on the west coast who made a 10PG into a 10PG Plus by adding the extra controls featured on the Plus chassis, I would think that would be just about the best looking NEC ever, 9" tubes, LC, and more precise beam and geometry control.

Xtra's and XG's are good, but commonly(I find) suffer from line distortion that can't be easily, or in a lot of cases, eliminated at all, which means a slight distortion in the outer edges of your geometry. Not critical, but annoying...
