Hi all,
I'm starting to get the upgrade bug. I have been running a Sony 1252 for 5 Years now. I have over 6400 hrs on it the piture still looks awesome for what it is. I'm thinking Sony D50; Will I see a big difference in Picture quality? I would like a G70 or G90 but that’s out of my price range. Sony 1292 would also be nice but I just don’t see them come up that often. I would like to stay in the Sony family do to all the input cards I have. But I'm open to suggestions.
Thanks Dan

Hi, Dan -
A D50 will be a nice, yet modest upgrade over your 1252. It's a newer chassis - the same vintage as the G70 and G90. It's got continuous Scheimpflug (lens flapping), a geometry and convergence system just like the G70 (more control than the 1252), and it's smaller and quieter than the 1252.
If you found a low-hour D50, it should be noticeably sharper than your current machine. I don't know if I could characterize it as "big difference in picture quality", though. It's still an electrostatic-focus, air-coupled 7" machine. I'd reserve that "big difference" description for an 8" machine.
The price on these machines has dropped precipitously in the last few years. It's entirely possible you could sell your old machine for $100 and find even a G70 or XG for well under a grand. What's your budget? What part of the country do you live in?

I had a 1252 and the D50. I think the 1252 had a better picture any mine had 14 000 hours on it.
Go for a better EM focused set. Pick up a switcher to put your Sony cards in and either an Extron, or a BUF2000 to drive the output to the projector.

AR,
There's no way a 1252 had a better pic than a D50, unless something was wrong with the D50 and the 1252 had much newer tubes than 14,000 hour examples. How was the 1252 pic better, or more to the point, what was wrong with the D50 pic?
But, I agree that he should shoot for a more significant upgrade - preferably to an 8" EM/LC set.

D50 will not be much of an upgrade, if any & new tubes are impossible to find.
Get a BG808S or M8500 and you will have a much better picture.

Yeah, but don't get an 8500 unless it's color-filtered. You're used to color-corrected red and green with the 1252 - you'd miss the nice reds and greens if you didn't have it.

Why not EC? I've run both projectors at 1080i and the 1252 looked better. The D50 had about 6500 hours and came out of a conference room.

Thanks
What about NEC-XG, the case sure looks nice . I see Curt has one with 42 hrs on it . But it's about 2X my budget, then add shipping and a new Moome HD card and it turns into a pipe dream!

Like I said, the D50 has a newer chassis with superior geometry and convergence (it's almost exactly like the G70) with 21-point zone, better granularity, and key and pin balance. It also has Scheimpflug so you can get way better top/bottom and side/side focus without resorting to all sorts of hack mod shims.
Not sure why your D50 didn't look as good, but if the 1252 really had 14,000 on it and the D50 had 6500 hours, the D50 should have looked much better. You didn't say... What looked better/worse about the two sets? Color? Focus? What?

I thought the consensus was the 1252/1272 was better than the D50...it seemed like the D50 was a dud. Never seen one but my 1252 looked pretty good (albeit a little soft) at 1080i.

No question that off the shelf, Sony did wonders with the D50 tubes. They are razor sharp, but then tend to fall off pretty quickly after about 3000 hours from what I've seen. I've got a couple of minty D50s that I'm selling for cheap, but they're not selling. Had a scam bidder on eBay last week as well.
At 6500 hours, the D50 would look worse than the 1252 if set up identically IMHO. D50s have no place in a conference room!
Try and snag an EM focusing set. they blow away the ES focusing sets.

The D50 looked much softer at 1080i than the 1252 did.
When I gave the D50 to my girl friend I also gave here a Samsung ATSC HD tuner box and an HDFury1. I got it all set up and she said. "That's it? That's HD? Your other Sony looked better"
She's not a tech head at all. But even she noticed it.
The 9 point vs. the 21 point geometry didn't really enter into it either.
Both projectors had a toasty blue tube too. I don't know the history of the 1252 but when I bought it, it smelt like an old ashtray so I'm guessing it was a bar projector.

Ahhhh that's why! I was wondering why the high hour 1252 looked better than the less than half as many hour D50.

I'm thinking around 1800.00 if I was to do the upgrade now. I could always wait and keep my eye out for a G70

Hi
Well I pulled the trigger on a NEC XG 135. The seller has no remote and says it turns on and lights up but thats all he can tell me. I will know more in a few days when it gets here. Will this be a step up from the 1252?

Yes and is it LC or AC? If you haven't seen the condition of the tubes then I hope you get lucky. I bought an XG once and received the pj with about 2 rated tubes.

Even with 2/10 tubes it's a huge step up from a 1252..
But yes, LC is better.

I was going to say, on a low budget, look at NEC's. The G70 or 8500 would be nice, but also cost more. It's not like A D50 is a bad projector, it's just that there are much better projectors to choose from and they are all getting cheaper and cheaper.
I calibrated a D50 about nine months ago for the first time in a few years. It had 4500 hours on the tubes and chassis, but it threw a nice enough image at 1080i. The guy got it free and he was tickled with the image quality.
