TV/Projector: Marquee 9500LC Ultra

Posted: Fri Jan 01, 2010 10:34 pm    Post subject: No Video from HTPC via HDFURY2 to Marquee

Please Help.
I can't get my newly built PC to display an image on my Marquee 9500 Ultra via HDFURY2 (V3).
I get a blank screen or ocassionally NO SYNC or NO VSYNC.

My objective is to browse the Internet and play a few simple graphic games on the big screen.

I built a new PC for this. It has a Gigabyte MA785GM-US2H motherboard with an integrated ATI HD4200 graphics chip.
The motherboard has VGA, DVI, and HDMI outputs on the rear panel. I have the VGA connected to my PC monitor (it works) and the HDMI connected to an HDMI switch then HDFURY2, then RGB cables to the Marquee.

I have the latest ATI Catalyst software and drivers from the AMI/ATI website (ver 9.12) for Windows XP Home SP3.

The ATI Catalyst programs shows the VGA monitor but does not show anything else (i.e. what is on the HDMI connection) and will not enable it.

For you guys that are familiar with HTPC this is probably something simple, but it has me baffled? Embarassed

Please Help....
Thanks.

....Wayne

Does it work without the HDMI switch?

Does a PC monitor work when connected to the HDfury?

Do you have the power supply connected for the HDFury2?

Thanks Mark.
I have a picture of sorts.....
I tried plugging in the HDMI cable from the PC directly to the HDFURY2 (bypassing the OPPO 31 HDMI switch).
I got a picture. Laughing
It now says the Monitor is an ATI Radeon HD 4200 [Eview 17f + HDfury2]. Before it said only ATI Radeon HD 4200 [Eview 17f].

The answer to your second question is Yes, the PC monitor works by itself via the blue VGA output on the motherboard to the Eview 17f PC monitor).

With the HDMI switch bypassed, now both the PC monitor AND the Marquee show the same thing. Well, almost the same thing. There is no Windows Start menu on the PC monitor. It is like the left 20% of the screen is cut off. That may be normal. I was expecting the Marquee (HDfury2) to be detected as a second monitor that I could pan across both monitors. I don't care. This mode is fine for what I want it to do.

I am currently using 1920 x 1080 at 60Hz. The Horizontal Freq is 67.5 KHz and Vertical is 60Hz. It is a little fuzzy around the edges.

I don't think the frequencies are the same as my Bluray output. So I copied my Input 02 to Input 04 and will work with that one from now on so I don't mess up my current Bluray input definitions.
(My wife bought me the complete FARSCAPE 88-episode collection on DVD and it looks great through my bluray player).

What are the next steps?

Thanks....Wayne

Yes, two power supplies connected to the HDfury2 and the GammaX (sorry. I forgot that was also connected)

UPDATE

I now have both the PC monitor (1024x768) and the Marquee (1920x1080) running as an extended desktop. The PC has the standard Start Menu, System tray, etc. The Marquee has a blank desktop with the correct desktop background color. But I can drag items, such as a window or shortcut from the PC monitor over to the Marquee. So that works the way I expected it to.

I think I got this working by going to the standard PC desktop, right-clicking and selecting Properties, Settings, then checking the box saying do you want make this monitor an Extended Desktop.

So now, how do I configure the display settings for the optimum picture on the Marquee?
(it is still blurry around the edges and it probably needs a convergence once I get the right frequencies, right?)

Thanks....Wayne

If it's blurry around the edges you need to check lens focus and lens flapping.

I guess it is blurry all over. My bluray at 1080p is very crisp. So is the satellite at 1080i on it's menu. Although the letters are larger than displaying a Google result at 1080 on this big a screen.
Is there something else that could make me think it is "blurry"?

What resolutions and frequency do people use when displaying a desktop on their projector?
(I have a 6 foot wide screen and sit at 10 feet)

for actually destop use I like 1024x768 but I'd say 720p would be good. However on a 9" Marquee you could go higher and increase the DPi of the font's in Windows.

OK, Thanks.
I did try 1024 x 768 but it did not fill the screen. So I thought it might burn the phosphor.
Am I being too paranoid?

I will try 1280x720 resolution. I assume that is 720p.
The default is 60 Hz.
Should I be using a higher value?
Thanks again...Wayne

Well, I am giving up for the night.
I did a convergence at 1280x720 and it looked pretty good.
During the convergence, the PC screensaver kicked in and messed up my guided convergence so I had to start over.
I got it looking pretty good again, and saved the convergence.
Then I rebooted and the reboot looked awful (on the Marquee. It looked great on the PC monitor).
When it finished booting, the Marquee looked absolutely horrible (each color shifted away from the others).
I did a Recal 04 (where I saved the good convergence). No difference.
I noticed the Horizontal Frequency dropped from just over 60KHz to 45 KHz.
I don't understand any of this..... Twisted Evil
Why did I ever think it would be as simple as plugging an HDMI cable into the HDFURY2?

45KHz is 720p usually. 60KHz is some where between 720p and 1080p(67.5KHz)

Maybe 1600x1200?

Thanks Jeremy,
So my Recall 04 registration is correct for 720p (1280x720), but my PC ATI Catalyst software says I am doing 1280x720 at 60Hz. I will see if I can get it to output 45Hz. (as I recall, the only two options were 50Hz and 60Hz, but at one time I saw a lot more options all the way up to 120Hz).

Do you think booting the PC (which is probably at 640x480) caused this mixup?

why dont u just use rgbhv output of your graphics card.
i got a very crisp 1080p its simply stunning and i am only projecting on a wall.
my config is asus p5k 1gb ram pent e6420 2.13*2 and a ati radeon hd4890.
why did you get yourself a mobo with an integrated videocard.
i would skip the bluray player alltogether. there is no better scaler then a sophisticated videocard.
try cccp its a pack which contains media player classic and all sorts of codecs.
if you google cccp it will show up. and above all its free.
just give it a try and try to compare bluray and pc rgb output without switches.
i am not familiair with hdfury so no help there, sorry.

Thanks for the suggestions.
The HDfury2 converts HDMI to the 5 RGB cables needed by my projector. So I only have HDMI input from my satellite and Bluray player. I would need an RGB switcher or other device to use RGB output from the PC.

I got the mobo with integrated HD 4200 video because I don't intend on using many programs that use heavy duty video. I am just a casual gamer.

I will look into cccp when I get this working. Thanks.

no you can use your dvi out from your videocard, u will need an dvi-i to vga adapter and then a vga to rgbhv cable.
this is my setup.

I'd stick with using VGA or DVI(with DVI-VGA adapter) as the main output to the projector, which ever looks best or see if it can do DVI as a virtual desktop and just play games or what ever movie there while surfing on the main. That would negate the need for the Fury anyway would it not? I assume any software can output the same quality the HDF2 would control anyway?

Thanks for the suggestions re VGA. The HDfury2 supports my current satellite receiver and my Oppo BDP-83 Bluray player. I get exceptional picture quality from both. I don't want to replace them. I just want to easily and cheaply ADD a PC to the current configuration.

I do have a watchable picture now using 1920x1080. I converged the projector and saved it to Recall 05. 720p colors are still off-shifted. It probably needs a complete geometry setup.

i guess that the easiest solution would be is to put in another vim. the cant be that expensive.
and yes every input needs to be configured of course.
hope you will be able to figure it out without having to spend money.
