He would be infinitely better off with ANY factory built front projector, whether CRT or digital. A Fresnel projected direct view set will be horribly dim.

Anyone else notice the theater in the main picture looks like a FP CRT setup?

Funny, if it wasn't for my dad buying those "plastic magnifying sheets" like in the auction I wouldn't have a CRT projector today. Turning a small 13" TV upside down so the image is correct doesn't make for good coloring either but it worked to say the least, the IQ was terrible. The search for something better we managed to get his 4501 on eBay a few months later for $350 which was a good deal at the time as they were selling for $600+.

I'll admit I also built one of these a few years ago with a 17" computer monitor and a fresnel lens I robbed from an overhead projecter I had sitting around. And I was hooked, went from that to a Barco 801s, to a Marquee 8000, to the G70 I have now.
We all have to start somewhere, right?

It does and actually throws a decent picture if you used a good monitor. It uses a large metal halide bulb that needs a large ballast to fire it. I also started in this direction until I found this website.
