One of my buddies has an Articos 55" DLP that he wants me to haul off for him. Do I take it straight to the dump or try to fix it? I have another friend that would use it if it worked. It turns on, has sound but no picture. He replaced the lamp thinking that was the problem but that didn't fix it. Bad fan? Ballast board?

Could be and could be along with was it the correct replacement lamp, along with possible color wheel, along with other possibilities. These can be a real PITA.

He used the correct lamp. I'm positive of that. Might be 176 lbs of PITA?

Holy crap, that was almost a $7000 set when it was new 5 years ago. Ouch!
The thing has a frickin' motorized swivel base! Sweet! Here's a review:

Mac, if it was a color wheel or color wheel driver/sensor, wouldn't the lamp light, but you'd get whacky color on-screen? If the lamp isn't lighting at all, isn't it most likely the lamp or ballast/lamp driver board? Check for dead fans, too... That could keep the lamp from lighting (or it could also be that the non-lit lamp keeps a fan from spinning up.) It's hard to diagnose without theory of operation.
Might be a little trickier than normal getting a board for a Loewe, too.

I have read that the color wheel can be a problem on these. If the wheel dies does it keep the lamp from turning on?

Color wheel will prevent the lamp from lighting. Whether wheel is shattered or not coming up to speed. Sends a signal to the cpu and it wont fire the lamp.

Sounds like I need to go get it, he can't dispose of it by himself anyway. He has no way to haul it. How does a man live without a truck?
