I don't know what they're for, but I believe some of the XG-LC machines came stock with those "flaps"

I have heard that they kill some of the reflection inside the tube/lens assembly but this may not be the reason they were used.

I know, I know!

The guy burned his red C element, and I sold him one from an NEC XGLC.

(not sure if it came from me, but I did sell one last month...)

Curt,

So do the C-elements on an XG come with these "flap" attached? I always thought they were loose, on the outside?

Are they used to help off-set "gull wing" effects?

Yes, it is just tape. I think it was supposed to help ANSI.

That was an NEC factory mod on XG LC's. I think it's just supposed to help with light-spill (and ultimately ANSI contrast).
