I think I paid $199 for my first drive.... Now you can get one for $49.99 shipped.

My drive was about two bills, the LG combo HD-DVD and Blu-ray drive, and that was a very competitive price when I bought mine.

I guess that's the cost of being an early user.

NewEgg has this same drive. Its a 4X, and as long as its not one of those Combo drives you should be fine. Seems that the combo drives are having really bad problems.

I am not speaking from personal experience. I only passed along those [questionable] reviews from folks via NewEgg. I cannot imagine NewEgg would make up a bad review for the sake of their business. Smile

Slim BD roms have been available from China for under $60. for at least 6 months, there's even a BD burner for under $100. from China. Name brand too...slim drives are especially attractive to me because they fit in mini-itx cases...

You might want to point out that was a limited time sale. Or not. Wink

For those wanting to use a Blu drive for ripping purposes, and thinking a 4x-rated unit may be inferior to a 6x or 8x unit (as I initially did), I did some research and came up with some informnation that may be helpful. On dual-layer Blu-ray movie discs (i.e., most of them), the 4x Liteon will rip just as fast as their (much more expensive) 8x drive. Surprising, perhaps, but true. They all achieve an average 3x rate when ripping under those conditions.

LG drives on the other hand, while frequently rated at 6x for BD-ROM, will average 3.6x ripping the same dual-layer Blu-rays. So a 20% speed improvement. There are a handful of drives (Sony burners, etc.) that will rip much faster (6-7x!), but those units' cost is generally still $300+.

These are kind of nifty. I think they were originally purposed for laptops, but got installed into small, slim portable cases, usually with USB interfaces. They're really nice for playing discs, but kind of slow if your're planning to rip (about half as fast as the Liteons mentioned above). Not only do they fit well into the mini-cases, but with a USB interface, are easily transportable to any system you have laying around.
