Fair price for subwoofers?

Hello,

I am pretty well near clueless when looking at subs.

I found some on Craigslist, and would appreciate any feedback, they are 15" drivers in ported enclosures without internal amplification, other than that I have no idea what I'm looking at, are these worth looking at without knowing what the drivers are? Would these likely even be suitable for a HT? I'm trying to do all the HT upgrades on a pretty tight budget this year to save up for some lenses for my D80 so buying a name brand sub is out of the question, and I doubt I could buy the materials to build my own for less than the ask on these.

What do you think?

Thanks,

Erik

Not much. This is a passive subwoofer. Name? Unknown. Drivers? Unknown beyond 15". White Van seller? Priceless.

How much is not much?

I highly doubt these are white van speakers, look more like a DIY job to me, the port looks like it may be PVC pipe, never seen this on a white van speaker. Smile

The way I look at it, I couldn't buy the cheapest drivers, and materials to build the boxes for less than it would cost to get these, I'm just not sure if these would be at all suited for a HT environment?

I'd only buy them if the seller lets you take the woofers out to see what they are. I'm sure they boom a lot, but whether they are musical, who knows. That Gorydcarlson website is useless, it doesn't tell you squat.

Speakers in general drop in stone when reselling, unless they are some rare vintage speaker.

Pop the woofer out and see what it is. You're right though, if the cabinet is decently built, then I'd grab one or both, and do some basic online checking to see what other woofer can fit into it to make it sound good.

I agree, if the seller can not tell you what the drivers are tell him you want to test the speakers with an ohm meter at the connectors- get a look and see what they are and check if they are o.k. I know a fellow who ended up with a pair of 800$ drivers for 200$ so the deals are out there, and sometimes even the scabbiest homebuilt boxes can end up with "gold" in them...

Thanks for the advice guys. I asked the seller if he could pull the info on a driver but he said he wasn't sure if he had the tools to.

Inspection beforehand is a no go as the seller has agreed to deliver these subs if I buy them, I shot him an offer based on what I think the cabinets are worth, so if I get them it's no matter what the drivers are.

We'll see what happens.

Yes, the gold monitors came with the original crossovers and adjustment knob set. The consensus with the golden ear crowd seems to be to recap the crossover and remove the control after you decide on the setting you like. Mine sound pretty damn good so I still have not molested them.

Pass on these.

Get some decent drivers and DIY your own ones.
