|
|
Hi all
Had a topic on here a while back about changing all the fans in my XG110LC - that, however, was before we bought a house and moved. As a result, the PJ has not been receiving the attention it was due, and unfortunately I either did not document the dismantling of the beast properly, or if I did, can't for the life of me find the pictures I took.
So right now I have a PJ without fans and with some parts lying loose, some bags filled with screws and a load of fans. I've marked the fans so I know which one should be connected where on the board, but I don't recall which screws go where and how everything was mounted exactly.
Was wondering if somebody has pictures lying about with closeups of the neck boards and how they are mounted in the PJ?
In general would appreciate pictures of the inside, with closeups and all.
Anybody who has pictures and would be willing to share? Or know if they're already out here somewhere? I know of the Layout document, but those pics don't show the neck boards clearly enough.
Any help would be much appreciated, would love to put the PJ back together during coming days/weeks and get the home cinema room going
Cheers
//Joris

Wonderful, thanks!
The small 40mm fan is attached to the Green neck board, right? Where does it plug in, some fan pins on the neck board itself or does it go elsewhere? Apparently I cut the fan cable when modding my PC so not sure if it was a long cable run or not... In fact I'm wondering if the 40mm fan is really needed or not, and if so why it's only on the green neck board and not on blue and red?
Cheers

Yes, the 40mm fan connects to pins on the neckboard itself - up the top. (The other neckboards have the places on the PCB, but no connector.)
The green has a fan as it is run hardest, and the B and R get ventilation from the side fans. But, I did some measurements and the G only ran a few degrees hotter with it disabled, so it's up to you.
What I did was slow all fans with diodes (I made little links to go inline, using a male and female connector the same as the fans, plus a diode on the red wire). AND I added extraction through the base of the chassis. I also flipped the side fans around.
The extraction is important if you slow the fans.

Just finished the fan mod, although I have yet to trick the PJ by grounding the yellow wires. Thought I'd just fire everything up, as it's been in pieces since some time March, see what the status is.
I'm obviously getting the 'fan stopped working' message and the pj shuts down after 30s or so, otherwise all seems fine with 1 exception - I'm getting some kind of 'ticking' sound which I initially figured to be a wire touching a fan, but all fans are checked and it isn't that.
I've attached a picture and marked an area with yellow, it appears the sound is coming from there:
Is there some kind of component there that can make such a sound? And if so, which one could it be and why would it be making the sound?
Any ideas?

There is a fan directly underneath each CRT. In fact the red CRT fan is close to the center of your circle. The fans in the LV power supply are also close to that area.

Thanks but I'm aware of that, I've just swapped out all fans for other ones. The sound isn't coming from any of the fans... it sounds a bit like if it were though, as when a cable is hanging too close and touching the blades or something.

How did you eliminate the fans as the source of the ticking? One way would be to unplug the fan connection or physically block it from rotation. Is the ticking a constant cyclical occurence, like every 1/2 second? If it's more random it could be HV arcing.

I physically blocked the fans, and the two smaller ones in the power supply were eliminated by pulling out the power supply a fair bit to the front and checking if that changed the origin of the sound, which it didn't.
It's a very cyclical sound and faster than 1/2 a second in between the 'clicks/ticks' - I was also considering if somehow electricity is involved, but it's very constant intervals, which is why I suspected a fan from the beginning. A bit scary, if it's some component that's about the explode I wouldn't fancy having my head in there trying to source the problem
Mighty add that the sound starts in principle immediately after I power on the projector.

Check to make sure that the blue tube neck hasn't snapped. HV arcing will sound like that too.

If such were the case, would the blue tube still project an image?
(it does, so I'm hoping that means it's not snapped lol)

OK, never mind.
Pull the fan wires one at a time to see if disconnecting one makes it go away.

I've tried that too
Any other components there that can make such a sound? It's hard to tell with the tight space and I don't really wanna stick my head in all the way, in case it's something about to explode lol
But I'm thinking it's coming from one of those boards that are parallel with the tubes, or perhaps those big black things in the bottom?
Remember it's a really rhythmic sound

Just an opinion, sounds like a high temp protection switch triggering or maybe a relay clicking. Not sure if those components are in that PJ but maybe so. Curt would know.

Considering the sound starts pretty much immediately after I switch on the pj, it would be odd if it's a high temp protection? I think the sound is too 'soft' for it being a relay.
Know what, I'll try and record it and see if it is audible in the clip, if so I'll upload it to youtube or so. Maybe helps determining the source/problem.

Allright fumbeld about a bit and seems it worked out ok
YouTube movie - XG Sounds
raise the volume somewhat, and note that the PJ isn't powered on until after a few seconds into the movie. The main sound is the fan/air movement noise, but there's the distinct "rattle" in the background. That's the issue I'm trying to error search here
I also filmed the tube faces and only blue is active, that's cause there's no signal input. I tested a test pattern after and all 3 tubes work fine.
Hope this helps in resolving the issue - if it's not simply caused by the lack of input signal? In all honesty I haven't had anything hooked up to the PJ since swapping out the fans...
Cheers

Well, if you feed a signal to it, and it's ok, then it just sounds like something is touching one of the fans.
Oh...and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
We were just down the beach with the kids as the sun set, and the most awesome storm came in.
Went from 35C to 25C in minutes and the you could see the white caps coming across the bay. Swimming due to heat to raining in minutes. Glad we didn't go and see the fireworks...
Cheers

Does sound like wire or something touching a fan blade.

To me it sounds like normal Horizontal sweep circuit sound and maybe it's more pronounced as it is running without an input signal. I don't hear it so much in my XG but I didn't take the cover off to check.
