|
|
I have a friend with a 1209s with a problem that looks very similar to one I had with my old 808.
There is a glow in the red tube (was green on mine) and what looks to be a very noisy raster. The glow goes beyond the raster though. Increasing the G2 brightens the glow, but decreasing it only reduces it to a point and then doesn't reduce any further.
When turning the projector off a red circular spot forms momentarily on the tube face.
When I had this issue it was originally diagnosed as a spot suppression or spot kill problem. The tech that gave that diagnosis charged me $800 and did nothing else but switch it on and off enough to burn a nice spot in the centre of my tube. When I got it home I played with the G2 to try and reduce the glow but accidentally turned it up too high instead. There was a loud cracking noise and the glow went away and the video noise was also gone and all was well again except for the spot burn. I used this tube for another several years without issue.
After doing this I vaguely remembered and old post either on AVS or TAW that stated that cranking up the G2 was a good way to burn impurities out of a tube that had been left sitting idle for too long. Although I could never seem to find that thread again.
Does anyone here know if this is a semi safe way of trying to eliminate possible impurities from a tube? My friend is hesitant to try it and I'm hesitant to strongly recommend it just incase my case was more lucky than normal.

The best way to clean it is with a Sencore. I cured the same problem on my 1209s with a wooden dowel. Lightly tapping on the tube neck knocked the crud off.

Remove unused blocks from service menu and then use crt run in cycles few hours. That feature is build for this purpose.

Well if it's a Barco all you need is the Gary M projector adjusting tool
PS It's also effective on modded Marquees

Thanks for all the suggestions. Just wondering, what's the reason for removing unused blocks?

Thanks for all the suggestions. Just wondering, what's the reason for removing unused blocks? | Crt run in cycles flicker some time black and full white picture using every memory block available. So if there is some old unused blocks that have very wrong raster adjustment...
It's not good idea to flicker full white picture, when raster is out of tubes face.

Have you swapped neckboards?
(Paul...have you got, or can you get, a set of old tubes?)
