|
|
IT WAS AWESOME!!! for a while. :-(
I noticed that when there are menu changes, the PG6 mutes the picture momentarily but it always came back.
This time i was displaying a static screen and the picture muted but did not come back.
I can shut the projector down and when i start it back up it momentarily displays a white screen with some diagonal lines through it and the left and right boarders are no longer parallel, then it goes dark again.
I can also smell the magic smoke in the room. (much sadness)
Any ideas?
Bill.
Yamaha RX-V663 used as a preamp processor. HDFury2 and GammaX at the HDMI output of the receiver.

Look on the back; any error messages?

I'm no good anymore for finding the problem. This is something for Curt or Mark.
Wish I could have helped.

I appreciate the effort, thanks anyway.
I PM'd Curt yesterday but haven't head back yet.
He repaired the unit the last time i blew it up... looks like i'm becoming a repeat customer.

What resolution were you running? 1080p will kill a PG... assuming you can even get it to lock to it. My 9PG+ couldn't, but I've heard of a few that can. I was also told 1080p runs the electronics REALLY hard and would cause an untimely death to a PG.
If it wasn't 1080p (I liked 1080i on my PG+) I would guess something else failed. Someone with technical know how will have to chime in. My first thought would be to trouble shoot, but I think it's too late. Still, have you tried hooking up any other source to it (PC, TV, etc...)?

I was running it at 720p.
I've lost the deflection board once before, while using a HTPC. Booted the PC while the projector was on... Poof! Had to substitute one from my parts unit. Don't have a third so i can't try that.
I'll just wait for Curt to come back and tell me what to send him. I want to buy a higher model NEC but i just finished replacing my vehicle and want to get some house repairs out of the way first.
It's a shame, i just bought the GammaX and HDfury2. Also replaced the HTPC with a Yamaha RX-V663, and a stand alone BD player. I don't use the internal amps on the receiver. The preamp outs feed my Quad power amps.
I could now run the PS3 using the HDMI source, at 720p.
The advances in picture quality and ease of use was amazing!

Most of your description and no codes sounds like its not locking onto the signal, which would be the system board. However the diagonal lines and the smell are not consistent with this board.
I would try reseating all the boards in the card cage and see if that helps. Also in the menu there should be a feature to turn off pic mute when its searching for different memories to lock onto.
Can you tell where the smell is coming from and is the smell strong or faint?

Faint or strong is too subjective.
There were no visible flames, is the best description i can offer.
I have some spare, known good, boards in my parts unit. It would be easy enough to sub those in but the last time i started blindly substituting components i wound up with two bad convergence boards and main supply.
I have never seen a setting to disable picture mute. What menu would that be in?

Here is the procedure for the pic mute feature. If you can smell anything at 5 feet from projector then something is getting hot. Run it until you get the smell, then turn it off and unplug it. Then feel around for anything real hot. No code output is still interesting other then there wouldn't be a code for no sync. The smell and lines is what is bothering me. If you turn off the pic mute and it stays on long enough to get a pic of whats going on, post it.

Hmmm, i never tried to bring up a menu after the picture muted.
The odour did not linger. I don't think it was a burning component, i think it was a burnt (past tense) component.
The magic smoke has leaked out already.
Thanks for the picture mute tip. Is this something i would normally leave off while playing the PS3?

Your problem is a bit unique. If hte set show ANY light out of the tubes, then the H, V , HV sections should be OK. Ditto for focus and convergence.
Sounds like a problem on the system board or the deflection board or video amps. The system board doesn't really have any parts on it that can smell, so let's eliminate that for now.
I'd send in the system board, both video driver boards (careful, wires are really short between the output board and the CRT sockets, and there's one small screw holding the large heatsink to the side metal cover) and the deflection board.
Thinking about it, it COULD be the LVPS under the lenses, but usually the set will shut down if there's an LVPS failure.

Is the "video driver" board the same as the "video output" board? The one with the large heatsink and all the trim pots? Page seven of yor guide?

Curt, need to know if the video driver board is the same as the video output board. Hopefully not cuz it doesn't look like fun to remove

Yes, that's the one, the one that the CRT sockets connect to. Send that one in, the deflection board ( I htink it's OK, but send it anyways), along with the system and wave board. If those all check OK, then I'll send back an LVPS.
No rush in shipping, I'm out of town for a week on Friday, but I'll dive into them as soon as I'm back.
Here's how to send them in:

I'm not looking forward to extracting that one.
Can you offer any advice / best practices, for getting it out and putting it back in correctly.
I want to send thanks to all you people that took the time to help diagnose the trouble and offer advice.

It's not hard. The trick is to get the connectors in place when putting it back in. THe leads are really short, it's usually better to disconnect them at the CRT sockets than on the board.

Have you tried another system board? You said you had extra boards.

I did put in my other system board. Same symptom.
I did not try the wave board yet though, the memory of damaging my spare convergance board and main power supply, in the first failure is still fresh in my mind.
I had the neighbor help me take it down this afternoon.

Damn!!
It was the video output board. You could find the burn mark on it with your nose alone... once you got it out of the chassis.
I exchanged it for the one out of my parts unit and it fired up and displaced the "you don't have anything connected to me" message. The red tube didn't come on though, i'll have to check my connections after i have a beer break.
I'm gonna hold off sending in any parts for repair for now Curt. I still want to replace the unit with a better one and the money spent on replenishing my spares would be better spent on a more capable unit.
Thanks Folks!
Bill
