|
|
I know there is already a thread "Which remote?" but I thought I'd open this one as my question is brand specific.
I'm told that the Marquees use a real high frequency IR that many of the "universal" remotes cannot handle.
I have LOTS of remotes to try - an HTM MX500, a Sony ????100, and a Radio Shack 21-5116 (I think) it is JP-1 programmable.
What are your experiences?
Thanks!!!

I can program my M8000's keys into my remote:
Sony RM-AV3000
No problems

I know the MX500 and Harmony remotes work. I'm pretty sure the JP-1 works also.
You switching to a Quee?

Dave,
Yep, I was able to pick up an 8000 locally for a song and now have most of the boards (in transit) to upgrade it to an 8500.
I will still need to get the 34.9k HVPS to make the transition complete.
Also, HammerHead put up a bunch of Marquee remotes on eBay for $58 shipped, so I got one of those.
But thanks for the feedback on the other remotes.

GeBrown,
Are you upgradeing from a 12xx? If so,.. You may miss the color filtering of the 12xx because the air coupled Marquees are not color filtered. However, on the bright side, I think the best way to color filter the air coupled marquee is to use the colored glycol from a 12xx.
I went from 1271 to 8500 and it was a great upgrade. The Marquee is a very fun pj (IMHO).
-Brian
p.s. I wouldn't worry much about the power supply difference but I've heard the later HVPS's were more reliable so keep an eye out for a rev 3 to have as a spare.
p.p.s - I couldn't get JP1 remotes to learn the Marquee codes but logitech Harmony remotes work fine.

Hey Brian,
Yep my trusty 1272 is up for sale (oops can't say that here).
Yeah, I will test my various remotes and see which ones can learn the codes from the Marquee remote.
Nothing like starting from scratch on the Marquee as far as the menus and setup goes!!!

|
|
Well, I have tried the following remotes:
Sony RM-VL1000
Radio Shack 2116 (8 in 1) JP-1 type remote
HTH MX500
and I can't simply get the POWER button to be learned from a working Marquee remote by any of them.
I have tried ALL of the TV codes with no luck.
I have tried learning the POWER signal directly from the Marquee with no luck. All of the remotes give an indication that they learned the signal correctly, but holding it down won't fire up the Marquee. FWIW, I have a Xantech type IR extension system set up, and my IR receiver has a LED that lights up whenever it receives a signal. So I can see that the remotes are sending a constant signal for as long as I hold down the programmed button. So it's not like I'm not sending the PowerOn code long enough (I don't think).
I have tried Protocol A and Protocol B, no luck.
Dave (Person99) you seemed pretty sure that the MX500 would work - do you have any suggestions?
If not, I guess I will have to buy a Logitech Harmony remote.

I absolutely love my black MX-850 remote and the MDF whatever it was box you can buy for it that allows for RF extension. Works perfectly for the Marquee.
I had a Pronto 1000 which also controls the Marquee, but I hated the way it works. It did work very well for some people, but I like hard buttons.

I know people have used this with a Marquee. Eddie is using an MX-850 with his quee (see above). Next time I'm at Matt's Ill take an MX-500 and program the power button. I'm sure I'm not delusional!
Try it by pointing at the quee instead of using the repeater and see what happens.

Dave,
Yeah, I've tried pointing it at the front IR receiver as well, but no luck with my setup. My MX-500 is pretty old and I've heard of people sending theirs in to HTM (now URC) to get a PROM upgrade. I'm thinking that may be the difference. But I'm not sure why the lack of a PROM (or is it EPROM?) upgrade would stop my MX-500 from learning a command from another remote correctly. In researching this I read that the Marquee remotes use a higher frequency IR band than more modern remotes.
But yes, if you get a chance to try your MX-500 on a Marquee, I would be interested in hearing the result.
CZ Eddie - Did you do a simple learn on your MX-850? Or was there an Electrohome TV code set? Or did you go in and modify the IR code in your MX-850 with the editing software? Just wondering. BTW I lived in Austin for 17 years before moving here to Denver.
In any case, I've purchased a Harmony 880 on eBay ($130 shipped ) and am looking forward to getting it next week.

Hmm, I know the lower end MX's won't work with the Marquee (from what I've read), but I sort of thought the MX-500 was where they did start to work with the Marquee.
Someone gave me the codes but it never worked. So I learned everything into the remote. Maybe if I'd spent more time working on the codes and learning how to use the remote, everything would have been fine. But I'm an impatient sort of person and hate instruction manuals.
But yes, I learned everything into the remote just fine. Then I'd point at the screen and turn it all on or off or whatever.
Congrats on the 880... I wanted it so bad and it was one of my favorites of all the remotes I was looking into at the time, but now I can't remember why I didn't get it in the end.

The Marquee needs high IR frequency support in the remote to work. The MX-500 is the start of the remotes with that support. There is no difference in the frequency support and IR sending between the MX-500 and highter units from what I've been told.
One other thing you could try is to relearn it. I've noticed that if you hold down the button on the source remote too long, the HTM will learn it, but not broadcast correctly. Try to learn it several time pushing different lengths on the source remote and see if that helps.

Dave,
That got it!!!! I relearned it a couple of times. The first time with a short push on the Marquee Power button. That didn't work.
The second time I held the Marquee Power button down for about a half second and now my MX-500 powers the Marquee on and off.
Thanks so much for your help!!

CZ Eddie,
Thanks for that link - I thought I had searched AVS for "MX-500" and didn't find much. I double-checked myself and ran another search in the archives and that thread didn't show up - Good information there.
I did receive my Logitech Harmony 880 remote - WOW is it WAY COOL!!! Turns the Marquee On and Off, which is the main thing I was looking for.
It easily sets up for one button-press stuff like "Watch TV", "Watch DVD", "Play Radio", "Play CD" (it has state parameters, so it "remembers" which devices are On or Off). Because it remembers the "state" of different devices, you can go from one setting to another and it turns On/Off the needed equipment and selects the appropriate input on the A/V receiver.
I'm jazzed!!
