Ok, so the HT room in the basement needs the windows handled. I originally built a false wall and lined it with Miraflex, but then the vinyl blinds melted, turned a very dark brown, and looked to be ripe for flames. So, I removed the false wall and trying to figure out to to manager the light, and the heat.

I'm thinking of something like Duvetyne-based drapes running from soffet to floor. Looking at this site, I am trying to understand the tailor in me (right) when it says, "54"x25 yards".

Doe this mean its 25 square yards of fabric, which when divided by 54" yields the length of material on the bolt? That would make it 50' long, no?

The alternative would be do get some thin MDF material, paint it white on the side facing the exterior, and match the wall color on the interior. I did this in my Mini Me temp theater (converted from bedroom). Not looking for ornateness, but functionality.

54" is the width and 25 yds is the length. material is measured by inches for the width of the roll (errr bolt) and usual widths are 30, 45 and 60" but others (like 54") are possible. it's a function of the loom used to weave the bolt. yardage is how much you want of it. apparently 25yds for you Smile

to make things stupider, up here in metric land, fabric is measured in inches for the width and metres for length.

jeez, and they complain that a 2X4 isn't really 2" by 4" Very Happy

Ok, so then you are saying the roll will be 75' long.

I even thought about faux painting white mini blinds to give the 'acceptable outside appearance, and then painting the inside a top coat of whatever the wall color is. Of course, I have no idea what this would do if/when I needed to sell the home. Smile

Anyone dared take this approach?

I'm using drapes to cover a normal-sized window and a glass door along the front (screen - it's a roll down) wall of my HT. About 12' wide. Works fine; I've got a wire strung wall-to-wall about an inch from the ceiling, and blackout drapes all the way across. They're not perfect, but even so, it's pretty damned effective - the wall is south-facing and if there's any bleed through it's not obvious.

I got a smoking deal on some suede blackout panels - Solaris, I think - when Linens-n-things was collapsing last year. $200 worth of drapes for fifty bucks.

A lot of places sell blackout drapes, but almost nobody has 96" (floor-to-ceiling for me) ones. I had to roll my own for the center, and make my own for the rear wall, too.

You might want to think about hitting a jo-anne for a buttload of blackout and whatever other fabric floats your boat, and just do two layers. Easy peasy, particularly if you don't need access to the wall. If I didn't, I'd just have tacked blackout all along the wall to keep it tight, and done regular drapes in front to make it pretty...

I think you're right. Its a trip, but hopefully to a store that is still open. While my county tripled in size in the past decade (northern end expansion & growth), no one up here makes anything. As such, no fabric stores conveniently located.
