|
|
Hello,
I'm looking to setup a stereo system in our shop. The source is where I need a little help. I have a large MP3 library on my HTPC upstairs from the shop, and also have a backup of this library that resides on another PC. What is the best cheap way to get this music down to the shop, I know I could just split the audio output on the HTPC and run a line down, but this would require me to go upstairs every time I wanted to change the song, I would like to have a little more control than that. I could also setup my second PC or possibly a laptop in the shop and just play all the music off of it.
The third option is a networked media player. I think this would be the cleanest option but I really don't know anything about them. Is there one that will work with a large library (8,000+ songs) and still be easy to search and find songs with. A remote would be nice but I think controls on the unit itself will need to be complete as remotes don't have a habit of lasting long in the shop before getting lost or broken.
So what do the experts recommend?
Thanks

I have two Roku M1000/M1001 soundbridges in my house. They work with most UPNP drivers (I tried it with twonkymedia on a linux server (not free) and firefly on a windows box (free)) and they have a remote. They have wired and wireless built in and a relative large display. I like them.
The cheapest option is to get one of Fleabay.

Greg,
The squeezebox just looks too nice to be brought into a shop, and the price is a little rich for the application.
Beun,
I'll have to look into the Roku a little more.
Thanks for the suggestions so far. I may end up building up a mini wall mount pc with a small LCD touchscreen, then just run some media frontend and keep a remote for the other controls. With the parts I have I doubt it would cost much more than the other options, and I believe it would be more robust.
Thanks,
Erik

Get an Xbox arcade used for probably around $100 and use it as an extender.

I'm looking to spend less than $100 on this.
The current option that is under the most consideration is taking an extra PC I have, setting it up with a smaller touchscreen LCD and then running a frontend like mediaportal.
This looks like it may also be the cheapest if I can find a deal on a screen, as I already have everything else needed.

DO a search for broken cash registers with touch screens. If you can find one they are usually PS2 interfaced to the PC.

Greg, that looks pretty sweet. Let us know how it works if you get one, will ya?
My only concern is the software. Does anybody have any Squeezebox software to know what it's like? The only thing I have to judge Logitech software by, is the Harmony software - which is a total piece of sh*t train wreck - both on OS X and Windows. It seriously sucks ass. It would be cool if the thing would just connect to my iTunes library that's already on the network. Looks like a neat little doodad, though. I wonder if the screen is nice and sharp like an iPod or low-res crappy like the Harmony's.
