I was at a charity yard sale today and picked up some audio equipment. I don't expect any of this to be audiophile grade, I was buying to setup a cheap stereo system in our machine shop.
I got:
Technics SA-104 reciever for $4.00
Technics Sa-205 reciever for $10.00
Onkyo TX-811 reciever for $8.00
KLH SAT-5W outdoor speakers (4) for $5 a piece
And a set of LTV University CSO-4 weatherproof speakers for $35, I pulled the covers and they looked very nice.
So how'd I do?
No biggie if I wasted some cash, it was all going to charity so I won't feel like it was a waste.
I also picked up a like new Harman Kardon iSub for my iMac, turns out it doesn't work with the newer Intel iMac's. Anyone need one? I'll sell it for $10 plus shipping, or I'll have to find some way to use it...

Well I'll answer my own question. I hooked up the set of University speakers and they blew me away, just amazing sound compared to the cheaper vintage JBL and EV I've been using.
I'm very happy with the SA-205 also, it works great, and to make it even better the tuning eye changes color when the signal becomes stronger, it's quite retro compared to my other gear and cosmetically is in great shape. The SA-104 will likely see shop duty as it is a little beat up already so I won't feel bad if it gets beat up. All the recievers work great.
Not sure what I'll do with the little KLH speakers though. I think I'll wait until I add onto the shop, and then hang them around and run the amps.
Now I just need to find the best way to serve my music down in the shop, but that's for another thread.

THAT was funny!
FYI, UNiversity was a division/side brand of Altec and EV years ago, so no doubt they sound(ed) good. The University stuff was marketed more towards industrial clients, whereas EV was more mainstream, so you didn't hear from University too much. Some of their electronics was crap, but their speakers worked forever.
Good score!

Yeah, yeah, I know they're crap, but for the price they're cheaper than any other option, and when the machines are running it really doesn't matter how bad they sound.

Thanks Curt,
These University speakers are pretty impressive. Too bad they have the expanded metal "cloth" and weatherstripping around all connections to keep the water out. For now I'm going to use them as is, but in the future I think I'll clean them up, and try to mod the cases a little so they look more "indoorsey"
Thanks

Post a pix of the University ones. I think these are the boxy looking 12" driver ones? If so, those were the outdoor speaker industry standard for years and years. Some have 70 volt transformers that need to be bypassed for 8 ohm use, others are 8 ohms.

I'll get a pic tonight, these ones are tall cabinets with four 8"? drivers.
I believe they are 8Ω, they did have transformers that were soldered on to the input leads but I cut them off, can you explain what the purpose of the transformer would have been, I'll try to grab a picture of them too.
Thanks,
Erik

And Draganm,
I did find a use for the KLH POS speakers, because they are weather rated outdoor speakers I will be mounting a pair of them in our produce packing shed for the farm. Perfect fit, and while they don't sound great by any means, they will be worlds above the crappy little radio they've had up till this point.
Still keeping the other pair for the shop unless you can recommend something in the same price range that will be a measurable improvement.
Erik
