I'm posting this here because I need some quick suggestions - apologies in advance! Smile

OK, so... I've got a Toshiba 42" RPTV whose convergence chips I fixed. I love the TV, but it's got some caps that aren't great and wobbles like hell for the first 15 minutes it's on - and always wobbles a tiny little bit (undetectable unless you're looking pretty closely). It's gradually gotten worse, but seems to have stabilized. But it still pisses me off, and given that it might really die I'm somewhat nervous.

I've found someone on Craigslist (heh heh heh) selling a similar 42" TV; they'll take $50 for it. It has -some kind- of convergence problem. I don't *think* it's the usual dead STK, because they claim that there's a 'red shadow' that's the same all across the screen. That suggests it's just mis-set-up, or a lens got somewhat out of whack, etc - the STK failures usually result in big bendies either side of the screen, and I specifically asked (in idiot terms) whether that was what it looked like. In other words, it may be a very easy fix. Or it might be another STK replacement, given the seller's apparently complete technical incompetence - but I've done THAT before.

My question is this: Is it worth fifty bucks to do the swap? I might be able to get my money back selling the Tosh if I fix the Samsung. But is the Samsung going to suck in comparison, even without the wobble? Is it likely to die some other way, whereas the Tosh has at least been solid since I fixed it the first time?

I'm fairly sure the Samsung is a HCM4216W, but I'm not positive. The person sent me a fuzzy picture, but was apparently incapable of finding the model number - which is quite remarkable, when you think about it... Rolling Eyes

Anyway, I've probably got to make the call on this today or tomorrow, so any advice is appreciated! Thumbs Up

Yeah, I like it quite a lot myself. It needs geometry/convergence tweaking beyond the cap fix, though, and I really don't want to toast the thing trying to re-cap it and end up watching the 14" thing that's among our pile of junk downstairs... Surprised

Mate the Toshiba will be well and truly better in my opinion, the Samsung wont be much chop in comparision. There is a Samsung rear projection TV at work with some servere burn in, it didnt take long, and its so bad in most areas of the blue AND the green that there is no blue emitted from the worst areas at all, and the green aint far behind that.

Sure, it was subject to repetitive images, but not for near as long as the Toshiba before it was, and it was still pretty damn good after many years!!
