One of my favourites comes out on Blu-ray on Nov 3, 2009!
Price is nice too: Only $20.49!

The Blu-ray release will feature 1080p/VC-1 video, a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 soundtrack, and supplements including: Commentary by writer/producer/director Michael Mann; True Crime: Recalling the real-life Chicago Cop and criminal whose exploits inspired the movie; Crime Stories: The screenplay's 20-year history and how the movie finally got greenlit; Into the Fire: Filming in L.A., cast training, shooting the climactic downtown heist and post-production; Pacino and De Niro: The Conversation: anatomy of this historic on-screen showdown; Return to the Scene of the Crime: revisiting the film's real-life L.A. locations years later; 11 additional scenes; and theatrical trailers.

It's also worth noting that the Blu-ray will feature "new content changes supervised by Michael Mann." No details on this have been revealed, although it does appear that he may be shaving off about two minutes from the film.

Sweeeetttt.... This will be on my must-buy list - as Cliffy would say, FO SHO! One of my favorite directors - Michael Mann, two of my favorite actors - DeNiro and Pacino - and one of the best shootout scenes ever. I think the final shootout sequence in Miami Vice topped it, but it's still overall an awesome movie.

YEAH!! ditto here Steve- one of my all time favorite movies and (under appreciated) directors. The gunfight scene has been an audio test standard for me on many systems, most do not image the reverberation up the buildings very clearly...but when they do... Thumbs Up
This is also the role that really changed my perception of Val Kilmer...
I think it's time to plan a Mann film festival weekend.

That's funny you guys. I watched this one night and found it to be a boring movie. Maybe I need to rewatch it.

OMG. Boring?!?! It's a little long, but I can't IMAGINE how anybody could find Heat boring! Were you watching in the HT, or on a bedroom TV or something?

Looks like there will be some content changes. I just read this:

Quote:
As previously reported, Michael Mann's 'Heat' starring Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, and Val Kilmer will hit Blu-ray on November 3.

Sounds like he's taking the chance to tighten up the film a bit. With 2 minutes gone maybe Jeremy will like it now? Smile

I just watched this last night for the first time in several years. Still a great movie but the transfer is total crap. The image was so soft I can say it looked like a DVD. My wife's (who had never seen Heat before) comments were that it must be an old movie...

Had such high hopes but when compared to newer releases it's like night and day. I'm very surprised because Mann is known as a visceral director and his films have top flight cinematography. I'd expect he would have demanded a better transfer; then again he may not have been really involved.

Wow, that's too bad. I never got around to picking this one up, but I see it's only $9.13 now on Amazon. For $9, I might just grab it next time I'm ordering something just to see what it looks like.

Interesting, High-Def Digest sure didn't pan it the way you did, jbmeyer!

The Video: Sizing Up the Picture

The Blu-ray of 'Heat' features a newly-restored transfer supervised by Michael Mann, and the 1080p/VC-1 (2.40:1) encode delivers a faithful and respectable presentation.

Mann went with a slightly cool and subdued color palette, which may seem like an odd choice for a film called 'Heat,' but in the end it suits the movie just fine. The rich, dark black levels are always impressive and whites are also bright and clean. The picture is generally sharp and detailing is pretty strong. There's a thin consistent grain field throughout without any unsightly spikes. Textures and delineation in facial features and suits are well defined. Dimensionality is good in exterior scenes, and while there's softness to certain images, particularly the overhead night shots of the cityscape, it shouldn't detract from the experience. Sections of a few scenes have a hint of blurring as well, but I believe that's more to do with the style of the cinematography. Keen eyes will catch some minimal edge enhancement in places, but the picture is free of other common annoyances like artifacting, digital noise, and macroblocking. There also seems to be very little DNR application if any. Nitpicks aside, most should be pleased with this upgrade.

They even gave it 4/5 stars for HD video quality... Were your "transfer is total crap" and "image so soft it looked like a DVD" statements a bit hyperbolic, perhaps?

Kal,

SPeaking of Blurays in general, where do you now rent Blurays from in your local, now that BB and Rogers is toast? Is there any mail order outfits in this country worth using?

No I wasn't being a smart ass Smile To each his own I guess.

When compared to a film like POTC: OST they are in different leagues. Perhaps that is not a fair comparison but that's what happens as quality improves over time.

OTOH, I watched Black Rain a few weeks ago and it looked really good for a film that is almost 25 years old. Furthermore, I have seen recent films on DVD that had really good transfers and looked comparable to some older films on Blu-Ray.

Then again, I was just in the theater to see the films Avengers and The Safe and the presentation was not very good. The digital PJ's just wash the image out and the condition of the screens was terrible. The other issue is when recent films are shot partially (or totally) in HD there is a different look than 35mm film.
