Hello All,
I am setting up the NEC 601 imager / NEC 6 PG +. Mounted, toed in and ready for the next step. For the initial setup I am going to use my laptop, Keep in mind it is not a high performace laptop and doesn't have a great graphics card. However am going to use it as the initial. The question has to do with Video / RGB signal entry?? I am not sure of which to use, this is still new to me so I want to figure this out to expand my knowledge. If some one would be so kind to explain the both as the manual is really not designed for the newbies!

Thanks
Mike

To use your laptop you'll need a VGA (or DVI-A/DVI-I) to BNC breakout cable. You will be using RGB input.

Thanks Dave.....

Should I be setting everything up for RGB? PS3, DVD, etc....

Whats the difference for the Video and RGB signals?? When would someone use a Video entry??

All of your sources will be set up for RGB. The only time you would want to use Video is if you are trying to run composite video or S-video sources into the projector, or if you have system board or source lock problems and have to revert to a Video frequency block to recover things and troubleshoot.

Never.

And in fact, many, if not most NEC's didn't even ship with a video decoder board installed.

As others have stated, plain video is only used as a baseline diagnostic/setup tool. These are data grade projectors, using plain video with them would look terrible, you need a minimum of a line doubled or progressive signal, ideally something a bit higher like 1080i HD looks best.

Well I hooked up the laptop and set the resolution to as low as I could go. I think it was about 800x600 , the other option I have for resolution is 1024x768 the refresh rate is 60hz; I can't change that. I tried to hook it up last night and found the when the laptop was hooked up to the projector the screen went a little crazy and I couldn't set a up a signal. Any thoughts? I guess I will have to try the DVD next.

1024x768 at 60Hz refresh should easily be accepted by the projector, use that if its more convenient for you.

When you say the "screen went a little crazy", do you mean the projector's display or your laptop's display ?

If your projector went crazy, you could have a bad system board, suffering from what is commonly referred to as "scrambled mess"...Try it again with the 1024x768 resolution this time, hook it up and then push the 1 on the remote to choose the RGB input.

Sorry the projector display started to go wavey and cycle and then turned off. I wonder what system board could be messed up? I have hooked the laptop before and have not had this problem. but that was over a year ago and I have only just hooked the PJ(mounted) It has gone througha move so maybe a board is loose. If I could narrow down which board I can re seat it......

There is a board in the NEC's which is called the "System Board" it is not just a generic term. It is located in the rear card cage you see when you open the projector up. System Board is silkscreened directly onto the board itself.
Also, it is believed that the "scrambled mess" problem which wrecks the system boards in NEC projectors is caused by voltage on the wrong prong of the power connector. If you've moved since last using your projector, your new residences wiring may have voltage leaking onto the wrong wire. I don't know the exact particulars for testing for that, but I'm sure you can find it with a search...

Question

1: What output port on your laptop are you using?

2: Are you sure your setting that port to the suggested resolution or are you setting your laptop screen to that resolution?

You do not need the Fury on a VGA port. Is this what your optional screen port is?

When you go into your screen settings on the laptop it should show 2 monitors. Are you seeing this?

Regarding the boards, they are all pretty much together and it shouldn't take more than 5 minutes to remove the cage cover and reseat every board in there. You could have one loose in there so it's worth a shot. If you do have a "system board" problem then I feel for you. I had this issue a while back and had to replace the board entirely. I would reseat the boards and try a known working source to confirm it's not a problem with the projector. I hate computers for sources personally, especially for troubleshooting.

Thanks All, I will try the reccomendations this weekend. I don't think its a board problem because when I un hook the computer the screen goes back to normal. It seems to be the computer..... I hope! I will try the DVD player this weekend and see what happens. It was fun putting it up but no its just getting frustrating. I supose thats the fun with these things.

Thanks
Mike

I had the same problem recently when I hooked up mine for the first time. If you swap the H and V cables I believe you will have a Bingo! Thank Curt Palme for that solution.

I was just on your side of the pond at the Goodwood festival of speed, very cool!

Ok so I finally found some time to hook up the DVD player and save a signal entry. So far I have it saved for the first time around. The only thing is I am finding that the edge focus is way out to lunch. And on the fine and coarse cross hairs the edges for the R and B don't ecatly macht up very well. The center is pretty good but thats it. Oh and this time I couldn't get a picture out of the DVD??? only the PJ screens would come up. Its frustrating and hope I can get this up and running soon. Any advices for this first timer would be appreciated.

Thanks
Mike
