Projector service history
My 9 year old Dwin HD-700 (manufacture date May 2000) was serviced in August 2008 by Diane at Dwin for an issue where there was a short in the motherboard which ended with flames coming from the motherboard. From the looks of the work, they replaced the motherboard with this last service. Prior to that the red neck card was repaired by Dwin as well. Dwin also did a requested health check and provided a general clean-up on the unit as well as replace a busted screw on the outer housing.

Issue
Since about 3-6 months after I received the unit back the unit shut off intermittently. Pressing the power button on the remote would get it working. Since it appeared that Dwin was out of business by this time and confirmed by the threads here, I decided to live with it.

Fast forward to today where while watching some 1080i programming the HD-700 made a loud cracking sound (it sounded almost like glass breaking) and ceased working and of course the LED was flashing quickly. There was a smoky smell near the front of the unit.

Now when I plug in the unit the LED flashes slowly, but once I turn it on I see the CRTs barely start to glow near the neck cards and hear a click, then the LED flashes quickly. All 3 fans appear to run as well.

Troubleshooting
I removed the covers and there was no glass or any obvious damage. I checked the power supply by removing and opening it and all looked fine visibly. At first only the red CRT neck started to glow, so I tried disconnecting the ribbon cable from the neck cards one-by-one to simulate CRT failure and tried again. Now all three start to glow, but it still doesn't power on.

I will be happy to troubleshoot whatever is necessary to figure out what is wrong with this unit. Unfortunately I may be traveling on business fairly soon.

Since DWIN is now out of business, there's two ways to troubleshoot/repair these DWIN sets:

1) Send me the power supply to check in a set here, hoping that it's the problem. I've got working DWINs here to make that work. The problem started with an HV arc which is on the power supply, sometimes that takes out the motherboard, sometimes not.

2) Send the whole set to me. Figure on about the same repair rates as DWIN. THey charged a flat rate of $385 no matter what was wrong with it, I charge $250 to service the power supply, $350 if it's a number of issues.

These DWINs are not modular like other sets. I've had one customer that I swapped the motherboard, power supply and CPU board with, and the damn set still isn't working. He ended up scrapping it, but I've had good success with most DWINS, as I've bought about 10 that I'm using for parts, so I've got all parts in stock.

Yup,

I had the same symptoms. Swapped the PS and all is well. Hopefully it didn't trash your motherboard too. If I were you I would send the PS to Curt and have him repair it then try your system. If your tubes are good then it is definitely worth fixing. I have replaced two neck boards as well. Red and Blue. Seems like they fail fairly regularly.

Dan why not upgrade. there are much better machines available that will do Blue Ray justice for about what you will spend trying to track down the propblem and fixing it on the Dwin.
The fact that they're not modular like other sets make repair a huge hassle in down time, shipping costs, and the probability that it might still not work when your done.

Hello Curt,

If you would be interested, the projector discussed in this post (http://www.curtpalme.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=195104#195104) is available for parts. As noted in the post, it was serviced by DWIN twice and with exception to the issue likely with the power supply was working well. This item will be available for about a week or so as I am moving. Either way, please reply as otherwise, this device will meet a demise through the city's waste management department.

Obviously I did get a different projector, an Epson Home Cinema 8700 UB that has been working wonderfully.
