Hi there,

as here in northern Germany are no reliable servicemen for crt-projectors I hope one
of you may help me.
I am repairing HiFi equipment for 25 years and have no experience in servicing TV sets.

I got my Sony D50 "for free", it was not running and sortet out by the Kiel high scool.
Several parts of the power supply and the PA board had shorted, and after replacing
them I found out the red tube had a short in the HV.
I was lucky to purchase a good red tube from Curt (who helped me finding out the faulty
areas in the machine by email as well).
I ran the projector for several days without a screen just to be shure it operates reliable.

Now I first threw the picture on a screen and checked all functions. The timer says 581
hrs on each tube (including the red one I changed because no reset of the timer). This
is "like new" I think. All possible adjustments (convergence etc.) work fine, the are no
errors, but there is a problem with the red tube :

When I input an "all white" picture there are kind of "slightly red clouds" on the screen,
they seem to be always in the same area.
When I input RGB black&white vertical bars and look into the red tube, I see that the
LEFT contures of the bars are sharp + perfect, but the RIGHT ones are kind of frayed.
This results in random reddish shades in the picture when watching video material.
In the blue and green tubes the contures are sharp + perfect, left and right.

Did I do something wrong when replacing the tube ? Is there anything to be aligned
in the driver electronics after changing the tube ? I did not find anything like this in the
service manual.

I apologize for my bad english,
thanks to all,
Andreas

Hi,

I tried to get photos with my mobil phone yesterday - poor quality, no way !
Will borrow a camera today.

In the meantime I have to advance my observations :

The frayed effects on the right borders of objects look like the tail of a comet
and can be seen best with an "all white" picture and the menue "on", and it
happens in all three tubes - in the red one it was just most apparent.

Thanks,
Andreas

@ AnalogRocks :

Yeah - I think you just put my problem in one tiny word !

I even in german had not the idea of the word "streaking", and it just wasn't in my
english vocabulary (my last lessons for technical english are about 25 years ago,
and they must have been about repairing the "brand new" technology of CD-players
with english service manuals only).

I will work through the several posts in this forum by using the forum-search and hope
to find a solution there (by the way, if you search for the german word for "streaking" in
google germany you just find heeps of people who have trouble with their bubble-jet
printers ... and nothing at all for crt projectors !).

Thanks a lot,
Andreas

o.k.,

it looks like @geofbuck has the same problem as I have, and Curt mentioned
either the tube sockets or the PA board might be bad.

On my D50 there are no flashes in the other tubes if I switch one on/off in the
test pattern mode, so it may be the PA-board.

I have a second D50, but in that one one power transistor and two power diodes
were shorted on the PA board (and the red tube has a short as well).
Since I have got the (original) Sony spare parts from my german distributor I
will repair my second PA board and try it out in my "running" D50 (which is now
situated under the ceiling of my living room ...).

I know Curt earns his income by repairing boards too, but maybe in my case
it might be possible to get at least one PA board working without sending it to
the US ..... Rolling Eyes

Good luck with the repairs. And Curt is Canadian so you would be sending to Canada. Not sure if there's much of a price difference in shipping though.

Jeremy,

it's not too much the costs for sending items to Canada and repairs but the
time it will take.
After seeing the difference in picture of my old BG600 and the D50 i just
want to watch the "new" machine soon !!

I will report.
Regards,
Andreas
