i've read here both that balanced power[1] is okay for NEC CRTs and that balanced power will make them blow apart. i could find out myself for certain, but depending on the answer, i'd then need a new NEC...

i'm building a new room and have a 40A sub panel for the room. it would be nice if i could run the whole panel the same (ie: balanced) instead of having some circuits balanced and some not.

[1] at risk of boring those who know, balanced power has one leg +60 volts relative to ground and the other leg -60 volts relative to ground giving 120 volts across the two legs. regular power has one leg 0 volts relative to ground and the other leg 120volts relative ground.

According to Doug Baisey, he seems to think that the system board error of not locking to an input signal/scrambled menus is due to millivolt potential differences between the neutral and ground leads. With a balanced power line, technically there is 60 volts difference between ground and the neutral, so he thinks it can cause problems.

is this a permanent error? i have a balanced transformer, i could test the PJ with it to see if the system board fails to lock to input, but i don't want to cook the system board...

From what I gather the signal/scrambled mess problem is permanent. Requiring the system board to be repair/replaced.

Then again, one of the forum members here has worked on some system boards for me, and he's finding timing error issues, not stuff you'd think was related to power supply/ground loop issues.

I know Doug is the master of all things NEC, but I've never been sure whether his theory was correct. Then again, I haven't found anything to doubt him either...

I've run my XG on just plain old 115VAC for 8 years connected to power 24/7 and have had no issues. (Knock on Wood)

Hi Zaph, Hello from the MLOC <secret Electrostatic handshake> Cool

I've been running my Sony G70 on Balanced Power for over 7 years straight with no issues.

I found it reduced low-level line jitter from VGA inputs back in the day.

Having the PJ share the same ground line (star config) with the rest of the A/V also reduced ground loop issues with multiple 35' video feeds to the PJ.

BTW- All my A/V gear is run off a single 5KVA balanced power system.

hey Jonathan -

for you to say "a single 5KVA balanced power system" is kinda like saying "U2 sings a couple of pop tunes" D) funny guy.

i bet Curt can get you a boad repair or replacement for that G70 problem which you still have. now if i could figure out a way to convince myself that his NOS XG is not going to end up in my house....

as for balanced power and NEC - i'd heard that they just don't get along. and i've heard that they're fine... dunno. just dunno.

Didn't Gary Murell( i know, i know) run his NEC with balanced power? I remember when i was Installing my 5kva isolation transformer he mentioned I should do the same. But what iu hear is if you run all your equipment that way you need to make use there is equal draw from both sides of the balanced power. so the sam amp draw from each 60volt side or it can cause issues and make things worse.

Not 100% sure on this, just from memory.

Good one!

Women? Doesn't Gary still live with his parents?

Connecting a NEC to "balanced power" is like sticking a pistol in your mouth and pulling the trigger to see if it's loaded Laughing

Yes, and I think the poor projector only lasted a couple of year...Of course he couldn't keep is finger away from tweaking pots, so it may not have been the balanced power baloney. Anything the man owns seems blow up in his face.

Yeah he has done some stupid things. I have to say though the pic he has on Videogon in his HD10 GT17 for sale thread looks very good. looks like he got the runco working.

That would be great, but given Gary's history of exaggeration, confabulation and outright bullshite- I would hate for anyone who doesn't know the back story to think he is a good trader. He is one of the few people who has managed to get banned from this site.
