Just got this from craigslist dirt cheap, mostly for the separate processor unit that I hope to use with my Runco IDP980 front projector.

I suspect a dead power supply because nothing happens when you turn on the switch on the back (I would expect at least fans or a pilot light or something) I have read that was a known problem with these and the pioneer model this is based on.

I don't have the remote, do I need it to turn it on?

Anybody have any troubleshooting tips to confirm it is a power supply problem or any other pearls of wisdom?

I hate to just recycle the set if it still has life left in it.

Oh wait!
Plugged it in and have a steady glowing red light on the bottom left!
Could be good, could be good.
I tried power on with my Runco projector remote but nothing happened.
Does the processor box or a source need to be hooked up before it will come on?

So far...
The remote sensor on the plasma itself is not used according to the manual. It indicates(rather vaguely) that the TV is controlled through a funky "comlink control cable" that is mandatory. It looks like a standard telephone plug on the processor side to a serial computer cable on the TV side.
I don't think the TV will turn on without this cable.
Anybody have a clue?

So I guess I am looking for the comlink cable that goes from the control box to the plasma screen.
If I find the cable is unavailable would anyone happen to know the pinout configuration so I could build one?
Thanks for your help.

me again. I know you are all dying to know...

Telephoned a place called Planar Systems that was one of the most friendly and helpful places I've ever come across.
They confirmed that the PL-50HDX does need to be plugged into the controller box to even be turned on/off.
They have the comlink cable and sent me one in the mail FREE!!!!! Unbelievably cool!!!!

When I get the cable I'll be able to see if the plasma will turn on or if I'm out the $20 I paid for it.

Wow, congrats. Just googled the model number and found a writeup... $16,995 retail. Nice score. Congrats!

$16,995 I saw that too. Wow, is Runco stuff really that overpriced?

I'm happy the plasma panel is working because the scaler box that came with it won't do what I need for my projector. It only passes component through and doesn't transcode so I still can't get 1080i to my Runco IDP980 projector with it.

I need to use the scaler box now to turn the plasma on and off anyway, But I'm still watching 480i "upscaled" to 480p on my projector!

Plus I don't really need another TV. I'm thinking it would make a killer computer monitor...

Thanks Curt, that means something coming from you.
I imagine you've found more A/V deals than I've had hot dinners.
