I'm doing a road trip to Eastern Wa. state, then to Idaho, Montana, southern Alberta and back home. Trying to get caught up on shipping EVERYTHING out before I go parts and repair wise, but will have no access to emails and should have a bunch of dead spots with the cell phone as well while I'm gone.

My idea, me first. I'm gonna burn all the barco's. The G-90's are taking care of themselves (suicide). I think I'll start by raiding the Marquee section. I already have all the AmPro parts in existance. And of course, check the main squeeze for quality of cleave. If the dog barks, shoot the squeeze Laughing

Wow... those rams and the bear are cool.

Were those roadside or did you go to an animal park?

Heh, those are big horn sheep. Plentiful in the Rockies. In May they come down to the roadside and fatten up, I could (almost) have reached out and touched them. they were literally less than 10' away from the truck. Everyone was stopping to take pictures, they ignored us.

The bear sighting was a bit of a fluke, I looked down a side road and there he was, but I was screaming by at 65 MPH. I hoped he'd stick around while I braked and turned around, and sure enough, he waited for me to take three pix, then he ran down the embankment. I cropped the bear picture, he was actually about 100' away.

The grizzly I saw outside out Blue River BC about 18 months ago was the best though. A massive beast, scared as hell of the truck when I turned it around.

THe best place IMHO to see animals is in Jasper park, on the way from Edmonton to Vancouver. You pass through Blue River then too. An awesome trip, I try and do it once a year when I go to Edmonton to do some install.

Hey Clarence, quick question: The lens on the camera won't autofocus closer than about 3'. I am assuming I need to troll for a closeup lens? Also looking for a bigass zoom lens..Wink

Yep... looks like the closest focus is 37" on that 35-135mm lens.

A popular choice is the 50mm f/1.8 (aka "thrifty fifty" or "plastic fantastic")... it sells for $75-$100. It focuses within 18". If you want to do real extreme macros, you can get a reversing ring for ~$6 (search ebay for "canon macro 58mm reverse adapter"). I think the 50/1.8 is a good choice because f/1.8 is great for low light portraits.

Or, if you can spend a bit more, the 50/1.4 sells for about $300 used ($400 new). It also has a 18" min focus distance.

I have a 17-85mm IS ($454 at amazon) and a 28-135mm IS ($412 at amazon) that I'm going to sell to upgrade to the 16-35mm f/2.8L. Both have Image Stabilization (IS).
The 17-85mm IS has a close focusing distance of 1.15' (13.8 inches). So that's the closest focusing lens of the group, plus, I think you'd appreciate the 17mm wide angle if you've had a hard time fitting people to fit in the frame, especially indoor group shots.
The 28-135mm IS has a close focusing distance of 20 inches.
$299 each.

For a bigass zoom, I'm going to be selling my Sigma 50-500mm (aka "Bigma")...
http://www.amazon.com/Sigma-50-500mm-4-6-3-Telephoto-Cameras/dp/B0009F3MPQ

Ever since I got the Canon 100-400mm IS L lens, I don't use the Bigma. But that's probably overkill for what you want/need. It looks like the closed items on ebay sold for $650-850 used. It was missing the hood, but I bought a 3rd party replacement that works well. No tripod ring. The body is really beat up looking... Sigmas are notorious for their texture coat flaking off. The glass is in great shape... that's what really matters. I usually list stuff at the low end of what they've sold for on ebay...
$650.

If you're looking to spend even less, I'd recommend the 55-250mm with IS. Adorama sells refurb with 1 year wty for $199...
http://www.adorama.com/CA55250AFSR.html

But if you want more zoom to reach those eagles and bears, I also have a Sigma 400mm f/5.6 prime for $249...
Sigma 400mm f/5.6 Tele macro APO (non-HSM). Canon EOS mount. It wasn't re-chipped by Sigma, so AF doesn't work in all modes on the newer Canon DSLRs. But AF does work in Aperture Priority mode (Av=5.6) on the XTi and 40D. Using Av mode at f/5.6 was fine for me because I always shot Av mode wide open anyways. When the aperture is wide open (Av=5.6), the lens give you the fastest shutter speeds possible, plus you get the nice background blur and bokeh. Manual Focus works fine at all apertures. The lens is in excellent condition... body and glass. Case, lens caps, manual, and tripod mount included.

Here are some pictures of the lens plus some shots I took with the XTi at last year's Redskins Training Camp:
