|
|
I have a chance to pick up a 8110+ c/w Moone card for a decent price. Low hours; tubes rate a 8/8/10, still trying find out hours. The questions for you in the know -
1. Will there be a significant improvement in picture quality versus the 801S? (running at 720P via Sony 3300ES receiver and HD Fury)
2. What's the difference between the 8110 and 8110 Plus?
Thanks!

It will be much sharper, but you'll lose the great color unless you swap glycol or go with the HD-144/145 mod.

I've forgotten what the "+" designates. An 8111 would have ACON, if memory serves.

+ means the 34.9 HV power supply from the 8500. The very first 8110's simply used up the old 8000 high voltage power supplys. After about 96 all 8110's are the + model even though they dropped the + symbol from the name
IT's a significant upgrade over an 801S, your getting Electromagnetic focus.

Bill look into the P14 voltage issue, Ask if the problem has been addressed on that set ? Also, there's a lot f things that can be done to really push a stock Marquee to a new level. they are great machines to own.

??? no glcol I am aware of in my stock 81110+. I also didn't realize my machine was color hindered as indicated; the colors look good to my eye but I am not a videophyle.

The stock Marquee comes with clear glycol in the tubes. Your Barco has colored glycol in the tubes. The colors may look Ok but if you watch the greens and reds closely you'll see they are not right.
When my Barco 801s broke and I upgraded to a Marquee I swapped the glycol and the colors really improved.

You don't notice the color so much until you see something that's correct. I was happy with my BG808s until I got a 1271 and saw the color THAT had - it's got tinted glycol. After that I dug around obsessively until I found some optical filters I could put on there... I can't imagine running it without filtering now!

When I had my 8111+, I lucked into a set of very good condition tubes with colord glycol and they most definitely made an improvement. Were I to get one again, I would get a set of HD-145s and some adapter plates from this site.

Thanks to all for the education - I will have to check my tubes out; I has no idea and they had glycol (bought used so don't really know if it was stock) and as far as I know they could even be colored.

Thanks for everyone's comments. According to the owner the company he bought it from did the power supply and anamorphic mods and 1 tube was replaced. I guess my main concern right now is the total hours; 17000 hours in use, 15000 hours in standby. I know these are solid sets but that does seem like a lot of hours, any thoughts?

For a Marquee that was run in a place with good ventilation those hours are nothing, but I've seen flight simulator machines get really cooked with those hours too. Ideally at 32,000 hours on a 10 year old chassis you should have all the boards re-built. there might soon be a package avialable for that on this forums 3rd party products.

rule of thumb is if the guy sounds like he really knows what he is talking about and he owned it for most of those hours, you might be ok, but those kind of situations are few and far between. generally a unit with that many hours is toast. only way to know for sure is to see the tubes.
