Yeah, that's right. I said black level.
This first shot is a rather overexposed pic of the Nokia test pattern gray ramp - I had to overexpose it a bit so the camera didn't destroy the <10ire ramp, which was the point. So, you can see the detail I'm getting on the low end here. Tracking isn't perfect, but then I haven't got a calibration camera so it's kinda tricky.
So, to get an idea how black the black level is, I put up a full black screen and did a *thirty second* exposure with my D80. Witness:
And oh, yeah - if you expand the levels absolutely as much as you can, there's an even hash of noise across the whole frame... Yee-eah! That's what I'm talkin' about!

Oh, hell, I can get that kind of performance out of any of them, as long as I leave 'em off.

You know I guess that's how you get FFTB with a digital. Turn it off!

It would have been fun to do a direct comparison with the Mitsu HC5000 we've got up at the shop, with its iris all the way closed.
To be fair, I'd have to actually put something ELSE on the screen along with an area of full black, and see how gray the black got with something else there. With my AC 808, I have a feeling that the Mitsu would smash it utterly in anything intrascene.
But really, how often do you have part of a scene light and the other part dark, anyway?

Beats me, as long as sh!t is blowing up and cars are flying by it doens't matter.
Of course, then I have to go inside my place to watch the projector.

Take a high ansi-contrast scene from The Dark Knight, where Morgan freeman is talking in the well lit office and see what's left of it.
