I looked around and didn't see if this was against the forum rules, but if it shouldn't be here please let me know and I'll kill this thread right away.

I work at a university and a student worker of mine helped me mount my BG808. Since then he's become very interested in Home theatre and especially CRT projectors. He would like to get a projector of his own and would like to bring it on to the next college with him and set it up there. He's obviously on a college budget and can't afford much. We have some older model panasonics here but he's interested in building a htpc and doing 720p. I was curious if anyone out there has something they were going to dispose of that would at least resolve 720p. We live in central wisconsin and he's willing to drive to another state to get it. He was bidding on the "starship" on ebay and missed out on the auction end while he was in class. doh!

Anyways, if this is OT please delete it and let me know, or I can delete it. I didn't think it was suitable for the Buy/Sell forum and I didn't see any rules about freebies. I sure don't want to take away business from Curt. My hope is that he'll stick with it and eventually get a better setup, thus becoming another customer. Smile

The 101 types are to be given away, Curt wouldn't even bother getting on his roof to dump 'em, but in decent condition they would still make for a nice big screen tv.

NO worries. I'd get him to check CL or eBay for something local. Put it this way on the 1031s. I did a service call on an old Zenith PRO 851. Made 3 return trips to the guy's house to try and fix it, and last time I was rewarded with a shower of sparks from the HV section. It had arced, nuking several boards, thus the return trips. WIth teh tube wear and fungus, I finally wrote it off, and talked him into taking one of my 1031s for $500 total including the 4+ hours of service call time. Set looked fine in the shop. HE called about 2 months after I sold it, massive fungus in two tubes. No reason why, just luck of the draw. I finally got to checking another 1031 that I told him I'd swap out. I ran it here for 2 days, it was OK, save for a bit of tube wear. All I did is wire in his auto screen trigger into the 12 volt line of the unit.

He called an hour after I left, the set smoked and shut down. NOw I gotta take a third damn set over there to get him running. No idea if hte screen trigger caused the short, or just bad luck.

Bottom line is, there's no point in sending something as old as a 1031, so he may as well look for something local cheap, Get him hooked, upon graduation he can come back to me for something higher end. Smile

In Wisconsin...does not have tube shots though, or hours. I highly doubt it is "flawless", but even in fair condition it would be a good starter with a decent pic.

And i was considering buying a 1031 as a tube wear saver for my main pj. I hate jobs that go that way curt, i feel for ya.

I'd bet you the tubes in that XG are great, you can see the corner of the blue tube in the picture, there is no telltale brown evident. Not conclusive BY ANY MEANS, but I've personally bought projectors based on similar pictures and been rewarded with good tubes...

Be forewarned if you do get into an NEC. They are NOT easy to set up. They are NOT intuitive to set up, and they do NOT have a "Guided" setup routine like your Barco...but they can make a superb image...

PS: Make absolutely sure you get/ask for the FULL SETUP REMOTE when/if you end up picking up an NEC. You basically can't do a thing without one...

Don't scare yourself away from a NEC though...the set up might not be easy but it is doable. With a little bit of reading, your friend will be able to do a decent set up. In fact there is an article on this site based on a NEC set up:
