... at least Jim Burns says so:

I've fought with this guy before on avs. He took full credit for the design of the Zenith PRO 900. I called him out on it, and he took offense. Funny, now about 2 years later he washes his hands off it. Guys like this bug me. Mr. Green

I'm under the impression that he's right, and 1200 owners were swapping to HD-18s+C-elements. Am I mistaken?

I thought the 1200 lenses, with only one adjustment, were lacking compared to HD-18s?

Well they do not have edge focus adjustments, but I was under the impression that they were otherwise good lenses.

They are a bit lacking, but to say they are CHEAP? C'mon!

I think they are good lenses! The only reason I am going to HD18's is the fact that its easier to find colored C-elements with them.

The Zenith 1200 comes with coloured c-element already.

I've owned a NEC XG myself and have seen most other CRT projector models that have existed at one time or another. I also consider myself a fussy individual as far as picture quality goes... I spent more time on the magnetics on my Zenith 1200 than most will spend on setting up their entire HT.

The stock HD-215 lenses on the Zenith 1200 do not have an outer focus ring like most lenses found on CRT projectors. There is only one focus ring. You will not therefore get as good focus in the corners with a Zenith 1200 as you do with some other similarly spec'ed machines like NEC XG or the Sony G70.

Here's a pic - notice only one focus ring per lens:

Does it make a difference however? Spend your day watching a windows desktop? Then yes, I can see the difference. But if I was doing that all day I'd get a digital in a heartbeat.

On Blu-ray movies? Nope, I really can't tell the difference and I'm a fussy bugger. It has a lot to do with the fact that (a) when you watch a movie you're more focused on the center of the screen and (b) when a director and his/her DP shoot a movie they're also more concerned with focus in the center of the screen (or on the subject matter).

I've thought about swapping them out but frankly, you'll never notice the difference with real life movie content. By all means swap'em out if you want something that measures better on paper.

I have to agree I don't even notice the edge focus is out a hair compared to the center. Now if I could pick up a set of lenses for cheap to try then I'd give it a go.

This is the same reason that the 9" LC AmPro's are supposed to be a POS. Lack of "perfect" focus in just two of the corners. I have said for years that it made no difference if you were just watching movies.
