|
|
I am putting together a bid for a emergency voice notification system for a large outdoor area. I am going to have a total of (30) of the Community RSH-462 speakers (attached data sheet) mounted on 9 different buildings. There will be anywhere from 9 to 1 speaker(s) on each bulding. Each speaker requires between 630w to 900w @ 8 ohms. I would like to have a seperate volume control for each speaker. Any recommendations for amplifiers?
Thanks
Dan

Crap man, when you say you're doing big stuff in Tx, you're not kidding! Sheesh! You do realize that these horns are super efficient? You will rip people's faces off at full power to those horns. I want that gig!
Anyways, what I would do is keep the amps close to the speakers, and run balanced line between buildings and keep the speaker lines short. Balanced line is good for 1000's of feet with no issues... unless you have an electric fence close by. We did that in an equestrian center, and got a 'tick tick tick' every time the fence charged. We had 1000s of feet of mic line run throughout the place.
But I digress.
Amps- run whatever you want. Crown, Bogen, QSC, all make good pro type amps that you set and forget. DOn't get the cheapest line, I use ones like Crest CC 1800s, one step up from the bottom of the line. A few more features, a bit more robust than the CPx entry level series.
You also want the volume controls to be line level. Don't even try to find a 600 watt RMS volume control, they don't exist... I don't think. It's a waste of power anyways.
Sounds like a fun install, take some pix as you put them in. Biggest Community stuff I've ever used was the R1 in an ice arena. Worked wonders.
Oh, and if you're buying online for those speakers if you're not a dealer, let me try and compete. I am a COmmunity dealer, and a deal like this would make my numbers look really good.

We are actually using an IP based intercom/paging system and installing a wireless network between the buildings thus I will need amps in each building. This is just the first phase. The next phase is to put interior speakers in all 48 buildings on the site. I will PM you when I receive our pricing for the speakers and amps.
Thanks
Dan

Well then, YOU are the guy I need to talk to. Look for a different post here in the next 24 hours. A nuimber of audio companies are now making internet accessible audio controllers (Peavey, etc), and I want to know what it will take to interface them to the net, so it can be controlled either by me remotely, or via say an Iphone wirelessly at a location separate from the sound rack.

Whoah. Is the building with NINE of those things on it the size of a football field... or two?
Looks like you need high-pass and low-pass filtering, too - so make sure you put one in the preamp or between preamp and amps.
Is there secure/conditioned equipment space in each of the 9 buildings to house the amplifiers?
Curt, could you use something as cheap/simple as Crown XLS-802D's? They're "only" rated for 500wpc into 8 ohms, but wouldn't they be plenty adequate to drive those super-efficient horns?
Does anybody make any application-specific power amplifiers that can be remote-signaled (like with a input tone) to power-up the amplifier stages? Seems like it would be silly to have a dozen or more amplifiers sitting around running 24/7/365, but only actually used in the rare emergency or test.

We are having to cover an outdoor area approx 5000' x 1800'. The building with all of the speakers just happens to be located in a good location. Community speakers was great to work with. Attached is a mockup that they did for me.

IN idle, amps draw almost nothing, esp. if with a switching power supply. You'd never notice the power draw. I'd leave the stuff on 24/7, esp for emergency applications.

Emergency generator for power to the amps during emergency? Or is this more like an evacuation in case of incident type of system?

There will be a small UPS in each rack to run the amps for a short period of time in the event of power failure.
