Finally got to fire up the PJ's I picked up a week ago. Unfortunately, I started with an AMPRO 3600 and it blew some smoke at me.....Go ahead and let the AMPRO comments fly....
It's coming from what I believe is the convergence output board - on my board it's component R69 which is a 5 ohm power resistor (I think). I've got a second board I can test with, but want to make sure there's not something else wrong with the PJ before plugging that board in.
Any ideas on what the problem could be? Bad/old component or something else somewhere in the PJ?

You might not get a response today, saturdays can be kinda slow around here. You might have another problem that smoked that resistor.

Drop in the other board. THe convergence boards are usually self contained, nothing outside of the board will usually smoke it.

That is if it's the convergence board. The focus board is right next to it. Can you take a picture or provide the board #?

Try pulling J50 and fire it up and see if its still getting hot.

Try turning off the registration amp. "55" code on the remote control. The smoke signals should stop.
Too much registration input can make the output amplifier work too hard and make those power resisitors run hot.
Try turning registration on then setting the functions to mid range. If the resistor starts smoking turn registration off for a while. Keep centering the functions (there is a bunch of them) and a point should be met where the smoke stops. If it doesn't then the registration bd or reg amp has some problem.

Pulling J50 didn't help - still got hot enough to smoke. Turning registration off eliminated the smoke. I'll set everything to midrange tomorrow and give it another go.
The top-most board in the pic is the one smoking.

Neutral the settings for red first since R69 is for red horizontal...... It might stop smoking quicker.

Chances are something on the board in the red section has failed. Not uncommon.

I have had a couple of 3600 convergence boards with this problem. I think that the resistors are damaged when mechanical setup is improper at some time and a lot of electronic adjustments are used to correct convergence. On two boards, I just replaced most of the resistors in the affected area and the board was fine. The red section was the one to fry on my boards also.

Finally had a little time to play with these damn things and I'm close to getting out my BFH and putting it to use....
When I'm stepping through the guided setup, many of the adjustments do nothing. I can run the adjustment from MIN to MAX without seeing anything happen on the screen/grid. Some adjustments work, most don't.
I had a spare machine, so I swapped out the convergence board (I think), but this didn't fix the problem.
Please help before my BFH renders these damn things useless....'
Also, these are 3300's, not 3600's. Not sure that makes a difference or not.

You probably swapped the convergence output board and not the convergence board. Snap a pic of the board you replaced.

Scroll up a couple posts, it's the top-most board closest to the lenses. It's got 5 connectors on it.

Right. Thats the output board. That is NOT the convergence board. Try swapping the convergence board.

Which board is that? I've got the service manual. Is it the one called the 'green convergence board' that sits on top of the back tray?

Yep, it's that whole big scary looking thing that swings away. What you should do before you swing the BFH is test the battery on the CPU board with a DMM and get back to us with the voltage
