Alright... so due to room size constraints and the fact that my pj has been floor mounted for a long time, I was going to try and get an Epson LCD projector. However, I've decided I just can't leave my NEC 6pg Xtra... I did another manual setup on it and it looks too good for me to switch! That said, I want to construct some sort of scaffolding over my couch that I can mount the CRT on. I've seen some made with metal rails that didn't look too bad and wondered if anyone here had plans?

I'm trying to keep it under 200 dollars if possible, with as little wood work as possible, since I do live in an apartment... I have tools, but no saw... and the closest hardware store is Home Depot.

Anyone have plans/ideas/pictures of a setup like this done in the past?

Thanks,
Josh

You can rent that scaffolding for like $30/ day and takes no time to set up. I got 2 sets had one at about waist height (enough to heave it on the scaffold), then the other was about 6 feet so again a 3 foot heave. I was able to get it up (the 2nd time -ignore how I did it the 1st time) in under 30 minutes.

Guys - He means something to hang/set the projector on semi-permanently. I've seen a few cool setups like that over the years, but I don't have any links. The budget should be adequate.... A few 4x4s, 2x6s, 2x4s, and some hardware. Basically a dorm loft. You can probably google some dorm loft plans and modify to suit.

Whoopsies! Sorry, thanks SC.

Yeah, if you are half a$$ed handy, you could easily build something for under $200. Are you allowed to screw into the walls? If yes then...

This is a platform made of 3/4" plywood doubled up, the angle brackets are from Home Depot for $16 each (hold 200 lbs each I think). I used 2 1/4" screws with washers to mount them to the wall (Make sure you hit studs!!!), I also had aircraft (rated for a couple hundred pounds too - again all parts from home depot) cable for the extra safety factor. All in I think it was $70. It looks unsafe, but with the projector up, I could hang off the front with it and nothing moved. No I wasn't doing a Tarzan. I stood on a chair, grabbed the front and lifted my feet. If there had been a remote hint of a creak or anything, I'd have put my feet down. My wife wanted to make sure it was "safe" to sit under. She's fine now. Then again, I'm using a much nicer chief mount now.

Or just get a gorilla shelf and put it behind the couch. Use the lower shelves for A/V rack, rear surrounds, DVD storage, etc.

http://www.amazon.com/Rubbermaid-7086-72-Inch-Five-Shelf-Shelving/dp/B0006GNA1E

I don't know how much room you have behind your couch... if you could turn this sideways, the projector could straddle the 18" width of the top shelf.

Of course some brackets attached to the wall would be necessary since it would be top-heavy.

Don't use the flimsy all-metal shelves. Get the ones that you can't bend the metal and that have wood panels for each shelf.

You can buy 3/4" black pipe and fittings at Home Depot. It's pretty easy to build a stand to hang your pj from, just scew the pre-threaded pipe and fitting together as required. A piece of unistrut cut in half across the top, and viola, a custom pj scaffold.

ok, what the heck is that bottle of Whiskey? It looks like it say's High Plains and it's 12 years old but if you have to mix it with Coke then I'm guessing it's not really good American Bourbon? Very Happy

No mate, its HighLand Park 12 yr old scotch whiskey, i gave that bottle to my mate Aussie_Al you see there in the picture beside his projector. Get alot more mileage from a bottle if you mix it with coke!! Wink
