I also just received a projector from a friend, it works great and he really took good care of it. However I am noticing red smearing/streaking in dark scenes. It isn't that bad, but I can see it. I am using a HDfury2 for my input from a DVD that upreses through its HDMI output. Internal signals seem fine. I adjusted the the color temp for user setting in the util-service menu. This helped a little. Is there a internal red bias adjustment in the unit? Or something else I should try.

Streaking smearing is caused by the VNB, if its an 8000 some are known to have this problem with higher resolution/bandwidths. You can change out some part on the older VNB's to help but its best to look for newer VNBs.

Another thing is it could be that your astig magnets are not optimized, that takes some work to adjust. Bring up the dot pattern and raise focus up all the way and also raise contrast to about 80 are the dots round and is the bright cot in the center of the round blob? Lower the focus and see if the blob stays round also.
you can check each color separately by pressing color then 1 or 2 or 3 for each color of R, G , B respectively.

look at this document for more info

if you have an old 8000 with good tubes the best course is to find an 8110 or 8500 with burtn tubes, have someone do the board revisions and mods, then swap the tubes and lenses right over. Lots of benefits and pic quality improvement to be had this way.

Yes you could go this way, i have an 8000 that i found three newer VNB's, a CLM and a newer Vim and that alone helped the Image a lot. Thos can be found on videogon or ebay or right from Curt. then when the power supply goes if it ever does, you can swap that out, I have the older 34KV one I compared it to a 34.9KV and its very hard to tell the difference, the newer HVPS was a bit cleaner, but after some mods it cleans it up a bit. But like draganm says if you can find a cheap burt out tubed 8500 it will have everything you need, then you have the 800 for spare parts to trouble shoot with in the future.

Or, I can repair the neck boards and do some mods to make them better than stock.

I would be interested in a repair, what would be the price, and turn around time, this pj has become very popular at my house. Would you consider a board exchange? The red gun seems to be the only problem now.
