hi, i am a newbie to crt projectors and i am thinking about buying a marquee 8000 for $600.00,to see if i like this new hobby. is this 15 year old machine worth the trouble it may cause? 2900 hours on tubes .34000 on chassis. thank you dave. :

Can you provide the manufacture date that is stamped on the front of the unit?

2900 hours could mean very different things depending on how it was run. If the tubes are great, that seems like a reasonable price, although not stellar. My BG808s was $300 with toasted tubes, and that was probably pushing it - a year ago. If I had $600 to spend myself, I don't think I'd be jumping on an 8000 unless it was really in perfect shape - plus, they're kinda ugly.

unknown manufacture date as i have not seen it yet. i too think from what i am reading that i should only look at 8500 lc type or better under $1000.00. $1500.00?

8500LC units are pretty rare beasts so you may be looking a long time if you are limiting your search locally. I think 600 is a fair but not stunning price for an 8000. The Marquee experts will need to chime in here but I seem to recall there are some not insignificant improvements in later versions of the 8000 over earlier versions.

That is a good price for a local machine, its the same as if you were paying $400. plus shipping. Assuming the tubes are clear and have strong emission. See if you can get it for less though, of course, as the market for these machines is severely limited nowadays...
The 8500 added electronic astig adjustment, but its not "significant" unless your tube magnetics are set up poorly on the 8000. I ran an 8000 for years and it had a great image, and it was dead stable, even though it was an ancient, fixed rear heat sink model.
The preference on the 8000's are the ones with the swing down one piece aluminum rear heat sink, but like I said, I had an ancient model and it worked really well for years and THOUSANDS of hours of use....

All Electrohome projectors (even the ECP's) that end in "1" are ACON models. That does not garrantee that the ACON camera on the front will be there. If the camera broke, most abandoned them as better results in convergence is had from manual convergence. It's a great option if you're a druggie and short on supply. Watching ACON do it's thing is like being on acid.

the older one with out the drop down rear heat sink are the ones that dont have all the goodies, i think these have pre 2.00 softwear versions, my 2.0 has all that except one of the linearities, i thin C. Have to check.

great info on the 8500.I am looking into the 8500 with acon and a 8500 ultra both are priced at $1500. is that reasonable?

ultra is indeed what is being sold. however is the ultra designation also liquid cooled lenses? and how will i be able to tell in e-mailed photos?
