Hi All,

I have an NEC XG135LC. I'd like to get it to display 1080p from my DVD Player. It currently displays 720p and 1080i, but 1080p has trouble. It appears as though the picture folds on itself on the left and right. Is there some adjustment that I can make to correct this?

I realize that no one recommends 1080p on an XG, but I'd like to see for myself.

You'll need an HD video scaller or a HTPC to unflold the edges. Or you can just blank them out with the projectors blanking.

Yeah, but you'll miss out on a big chunk of the picture. This isn't a solution - the only solution is a PC or VP, even then 1080p 60hz is not fun.

Are there any controls on the chasis that can be dailed to correct this. Perhaps the magnets or something... I am trying to eliminate the scanlines at 1080i.

NO! don't even think about adjusting any pots, if you do it will be unlikely to ever get them set back to normal.

Sorry, it just takes a scaler or HTPC.

Hello

Not familiar with XGs but on other systems you would set Retrace to "fast" or "short" setting to pull in the sides.

Yeah that was helpful Rolling Eyes one of the big problems with buying used sets is when people who do not know what "all those pots do..." start randomly making adjustments.
The user controls are remote based and only a few adjustments "under the hood" should be done by people who do not have the equipment to measure and calibrate the adjustments. It seems to me that if you are trying to address a source signal problem by tweeking gain and focus that you might be better off downloading the manual or asking more question about the suggestions that have been made....before you cause secondary problems.
Have another look at your signal source.Try feeding it a computer based source with software that can easily and externally correct the problem. use a scaler, etc....

jask,

you are not being helpful... Tell me what is possible... Look at my original question and offer suggestions on how to get there... If you don't know move on.

to get to where i am does not mean i have randomly adjusted pots to fix a source issue. It means that I have adjusted the pots to get the white balance correct and that i have fine tuned my focus to see a very good picture. I use the manuals and the experts on these forums to gain knowledge of what i should adjust or not. of course i know not to touch what i don't know and to stay away if i am not sure. Even if i were bone-headed enough to randomly turn nobbes and dials, why should you care - it is not your projector. I have been successful with CRTs since 2000 - not a long time but enough to feel comfortable with the unit.

what would be helpful, jask... what pots would help in this case? I have a dvd player (marantz dv-7003). So hooking a pc to the unit will not help with the dvd player - my PC works fine, I can tweak to my hearts content. I want to get the DVD Play working with 1080p.

Thanks Tim... I will review my manuals to in search of these or similar terms.

Without asking a whole bunch of question about what you have or have not done I'll just spit this out and see where it goes. Assuming you have 1080p entry and did phase and shift, this maybe be more of a reflection then foldover. Bring in your blanking on either side and see if the anomaly goes away before the blanking line hits the main part of the picture. If it takes more blanking then that to get ride of it then test with a dvd that you can tell if you actually lost any of the picture.

See this thread: It have been very well documented 1080p from a standlone Blu-ray player, PS3 or XBox 360 will not work correctly with an XG. You need an HTPC or a scaler.

The answer is in your original question....you can not do this with the equipment you have. Others have said it, I have said it, what do you not understand???

My mistake I thought you were asking which pots that you know nothing about, you need to adjust to fix the picture. I am glad that is not what you are asking because besides NOT WORKING it would be "bone-headed" and possibly cause damage.
I care because spot burned tubes make me sad.
I am glad you are comfortable with your unit, you should search this forum and the internet for information on video porch settings and become comfortable with that information.

I know... you are not REALLY asking what pots to adjust, but if you were I would say NONE!! this is a signal problem that can only be adjusted with equiptment that is NOT a part of your projector.

your dvd player will output a 1080P signal however it is a signal that will sync to a plasma display not your CRT projector, because it has no adjustments you can not use it by itself to play a 1080P image on your projector. Your computer, on the other hand will easily play a 1080P disc and output a signal that your projector WILL be able to use ....and there are a whole bunch of software programs that you can use to adjust the signal to get EXACTLLY what your projector needs to give you a GREAT 1080P image.

I think we have covered this, if your priority is to get a 1080P image from your dvd player- buy a 1080P plasma. If you want to get 1080P from your projector find another source this dvd player will not work.

Hope this has been more helpful to you.

it be cheaper if you get a stand alone Video Processor like a lumagen HDP or HDQ or a DVDO VP50. With these you will be able to set the Front porch, sync and back porch timings to correctly get the image to scan on the tube face in full 1080p.
there are those who can get 1080p but for any Scope Movie (most blu rays are scope) its best to go 800px1920@72hz using a VP or a HTPC, it frees up bandwidth by not scanning the black bars at the top and bottom of the movie. You can do the same with SD DVD that are in letterbox form with the black bars at top and bottom by running it at 1440x600p as a letter box sd dvd is usually at 720x300 active video.

This is agreat post explaining Active Area Scanning

Hi All,

I wanted to report that I got my DVD Player to work at 1080p. I randomly fiddled with the PSCAN and AR settings in the DVD player menu. And boom it work. My final settings are TV Aspect 16:9 and PSCAN 16:9 Squeeze... Small picture within the raster, but it works.

So don't shoot me for asking but... if i max out my screen size pots to fill the screen, will i run the risk of cracking the tubes, if i don't ever display any test patterns?
