|
|
Ok guys, a good friend of mine has asked me for the top 5 things to put into the Feature request list for the the next Avivo drivers for the ATI 4xxx cards. The dev team there is interested to hear what we have to say. Remember, this is the group for the video portion of the drivers, and they are obsessed as much as we are on video quality.
He even told me why gamma was missed on Vista, it will be fixed soon!
The list is presented Tuesday for discussion with the dev team, and he is interested to hear what we have to say. I already told him, Gamma control in Vista:
So what else would you guys like to see?
I'm going to give him my top 5 from your list on Tuesday morning.
No guarantees, but AMD is interested to hear what we the users, and videophilles think is important

Stream line the code, make the font's in CCC respond to Windows font resze and don't restrict the CCC box size so when we use the CCC on a HTPC we can actually **READ** what's in the box at 1080i from our comfey chairs 10-12 feet away without having to hook up a VGA monitor.
Make the install smaller like the Omega drivers. Gamma in XP would be nice too that would stick after a dreiver update or reboot.

Oh I should add that's on my 42" RPTV with windows fonts set to 203%, Optomizing for 42" TV kind of makes sense since it's the most comon TV size these days. Optomizing for 1080i will likely make it look better on other resolutions too.

The ability to create custom resolutions and refresh rates from within the ATI CCC similar to nVidia without having to rely on a 3rd party app.

Proper 23.976hz output would be really nice to have. Currently there is a 24hz option but it actually output exactly 24hz.
Also including a "reclock" equivilant built into the driver would be nice.
Chris.

not necessarily a linear gamma ramp...which seems to compromise the top end...how about custom gamma curve so we can tweak the low end and not mess with the high end.

1. GAMMA GAMMA GAMMA. No matter which Renderer (Overlay/VMR9, EVR). It is very unclear whether the AVIVO controls are for Overlay, VMR9 or EVR. Gamma needs to be adjusted with at least 10 bit precision to avoid banding.
And make Powerdvd respect the AVIVO controls - it just ignores them.
2. Proper V-sync between video and audio. Maybe tricky with separate soundcards. Maybe easier with HDMI combine audio and video. Smooth playback is the achilles heel of PC video.
3. User selectable LEVELS CONTROLS, independant, or in conjunction with the HDMI specific ones.
I want to retain video levels at 16-235 and pass the full 0-255 to my projector, output via VGA. Black is therefore 16 and white is 235. The levels are not expanded, which causes BANDING.
Other who wish to use the PC for games prefer to expand the levels (black at 0, white at 255).
The point is we need levels control, for VGA and DVI outputs at least. HDMI is confusing, I don't know what to do there.
4. Custom gamma ramps - just like VideoEqualizer, which has 8-64 (selectable) points you can tweak on the Gamma curve. Tweak it at 64 points, then smooth it by picking 8 points and wiggling the line up a bit and down. Otherwise you get a jagged curve - which is the issue with the Nvidia interactive custom Gamma graph.
5. Powerstrip like capability, with the ability for resolutions/refresh rates to be called by a command line or shortcut. 3 decimal point precision. Easy EDID override is required for this to work (actually it's pretty good now).
And make them aware that the best playback experience is achieved currently by bypassing AVIVO and doing it all in software. This way you get Gamma and levels controls, which are essential.

I'll second everything on Mark_A_W's list. (The lazy b@stard approach. )

Make the CCC more like nvidia's driver panel to put it simply.
1)More control over the settings, look at how nvidia does their setup for creating a custom resolution.
2)Gamma control and video settings in the nvidia control panel
3)Custom game settings. Nvidia has this where it scans for the games and you can select the AA and Ansio settings for each program. If CCC has this it's buried some where or if its in there(I think it is) its very cumbersom.
So yeah, make the driver a bit more elegant. Some of the stuff in CCC is nice but if you are looking for suggestions the above three are what I really like about nvidia and what I don't like about ATI.

I don't agree, the Nvidia custom resolutions are bad! Right the current driver its broken for a 9800GT in Vista. It won't work with Powerstrip either.

There is no back porch option and the vertical refresh rate seems to round off to the nearest integer. DON'T USE IT AS A BENCHMARK! I spent the whole weekend trying to get a the right vertical refresh rate. IT SUCKS BAD! I'm going back to my ATI 3850 with powerstrip.

Well Ken?
What happened?
Still no gamma in cat 9.2 in Vista32. Not that I really care - I no longer use anything to do with ATi or a commercial player for my bluray playback. Thank god for Anydvd and Doom9.
