|
|
I've got the opportunity to do a bunch of corporate servicing to Barco projectors. That's the good news. The bad news is, they are all split pack projectors, those ultra expensive rare units where the tubes and lenses and HV are in one section, and the rest of the electronics are in another box.
I've only ever seen one of these on eBay a few years back, and now I could really use one. I don't need good tubes, don't need the lenses, I just need a working chassis to test boards in, as they are different from the 'plain' 909 sets.
Anyone know where there is one to be had?

My Cousin in Thessaloniki Greece works at the cities Science Museum. They have 6 Barco 909 split packs they were suppose to replace with Digital cause the guys from Barco charged an arm and a leg for re tubing and calibration/setup. I told him I might be interested in two of them. He never got back to me. He said most likely they'd sit in storage like all the other obsolete stuff they have replaced over the years. I don't have his contact info but i will try to get it and ask if they have them still. I could have my Brother maybe help you ship them, you'd have to pay him though id assume.
let me first find out if they indeed still have the units.

There is a snag here on this, Since it was in the cities science Museum is a government entity and the Government is in charge of them. My cousin said that they will most likely sit in storage for 5-10 years before they decide what to do with them. If you think there are idiots running our governments, Greece is worse.
My Brother said take the Afghanistan government and multiply it by 10 ! LOL
Its funny the country that started Democracy is the worst run democracy on the planet !

I am still hoping that my cousin will contact me and maybe give me someone at the Government equipment inventory department to talk to.
I bet if they can get money now instead of dumping them in 5 years they'd listen, or take a bribe, these guys are soo corrupt they'd sell the Presidents limo while he was in it.

It's in Greece, for God's sake. A little bribe money here and there and you can walk out of the museum with a cart full of antique PJs.
Edit: haha, just noticed that Athanasios already covered that important bit of information

Arbey has an older 812 splitpack, but the 9 series is fairly rare on the used market, used in planetaria, caves and simulators these units are only beginning to be replaced.

I may be going this spring, I will make a trip to the planetarium and start asking around. If I can get anywhere Curt I'll let you know. These might come in handy for you. My one cousin is also a Judge for the EU in Brussels. I might be able to get him to pull some strings.
But i may be just chasing the carrot on the end of the stick.

Just FYI, while I'm not going to post too much as nothing's finalized, I have people emailing me like crazy now regarding board level service on Barcos now that Barco is out of CRT production. While HT business might be slowing down, the commercial/industrial isn't, and is picking up. THat is completely extending my stay in CRTs, so that's good for us die hards all around. That's the only reason I'm buying sets still like those 29 BArcos. I could sell the 29 quadruplers out of those sets within 6 months at this point, not to mention the tubes and other boards in the set.
I appreciate any feelers that you guys have out there.

that's great news, Curt.
Hope you'll manage to source one of the 909 split packs.

The 9 serie became available in the 2002/2003 time frame, the newly build or re-build planetria either went with digital video projectors straight away or bought 908s, 909s and a few 912s, and are only scheduled for an upgrade in the next two years or so. 812s are from the late nineties, and have been replaced in the past few years.

This split pack thing is interesting. I had no idea such a thing exists, but then there are a lot of things I don't know. Is it possible to convert a BG 1208 into a split pack? This would solve my problem of the steel beam and ductwork directly where I need the PJ. I could put the tube section on the screen side of the duct, the electronic section somewhere else.

I need to check board numbers, there's a chance they might be the same as the 909 plain units, in which case I'm OK, I've got another 909 coming in that's not for sale. Here are the split pack numbers:
R7631395 ELEC. FOCUS
R7631255 CONTROLLER
R7631437 SM PWR SUPPLY + G2
R763140 HORIZONTAL DEF.
R7630276 RGB OUTPUT AMP.
R763623 CHASIS PCB FAN CIR.
R763129 IR COMM. MODULE
R763138 DYNAMIC ASTIG.
R764473 SMPS
R763142 " "
R763368 EHT QUAD.
R7631457 MAIN PWR INPUT MOD.
R7631455 " " "
R7631456 " " "
R7631415 VERT. DEF.
R7690401 " "
R7631375 CONVERGENCE
The boards not listed (EHT, video switcher boards) are the same as the later model 808s/1209s that I have lots of.
