Using the avsforum greyscale file I am a bit confused about the luminocity at low ire. I used the etech instructions to set g2 and the second to last box was just barely lit. Then I used my spider 2 and hcfr to balance the colors at 30 and 80. Everything still looks great.

Then I pull up the black levels on the blueray and.. well that doesn't go as well. The only box that shows it the one all the way to the right, not the ones right next to black.

Run through hcfr and below 30 ire is below target luminocity. I can "fix" by increating all three g2s so it meets the desired curve then the boxes start to show on the black gretscale flashing box screen. Gamma is 2.42 while balanced with the lower g2 setting, and once set so black levels below 10ire are visible I can get gamma of 2.11.

Thing is the g2 is much higher than as described by the etech discussion. At this point black is only "close" to black with a bit of residual light on the screen like the projector is actually glowing.

I'm thinking thats not right and that my g2 is now too high and that the issue needs to be fixed by some gamma correction circuit but I am not sure. I have the hdmi board on order, so hopefully that ships from moome soon.

I'd post up an image of what I am talking about but my darn laptop ran out of power and for some reason didn't hibernate. I can't wait until hcfr starts working on my mac while using external images! (seems like internal images only for now)

what your seeing is normal, it's why all the better afetrmarket HDMI devices now offer a boost at the bottom end. It allows a much flatter curve, without it you have to either choose crushed blacks or Gray Blacks.
