Anyone know how to do this? I finally purchase a Harmony 1000 remote and it controls everything - except the damn PS3 because it uses RF already (blue-tooth I think).

The PS3 remote situation sucks. You need a IR-USB or IR-BT adapter. There are a couple of options from cheap (IR-USB) to expensive (IR-BT). The cheap options won't turn the PS3 on/off, the expensive solutions will.
Nyko Blu-Wave (no power on/off):
Nyko Blu-Wave at Amazon - $15
Schmartz PS3IRX1 (Without Power ON capability):
PS3IRX1 - $35
Schmartz PS3IR-PRO BT w/power on/off:
PS3IR-PRO - $100
Expensive IR2BTci with power on/off capability:
IR2BTci - $150
DIY DVD/BD playback only using PS2 USB adapter (no power on/off):

I like the notion of bluetooth for remotes if everything was bluetooth. will be a while before that happens. guess I'll have to fork out some bucks. I can't stand using the PS3 remote controllers, not to mention that it is a second remote to be fiddling with. They are sensitive and when you shift positions in your couch during a movie you inevitably hit the fast foward button, or something else.
Thanks ecrabb for the quick and informative advice/links

No problem! I agree the Sony BT remote is super-sensitive, and as you mention is both good and bad. I just got a Harmony 1000 for Christmas, so I'm in the same boat as you...
One school of thought is that the power-on issue isn't a big deal since you'll likely be putting a disc in the drive, anyway... which will turn on the PS3... and that power-off is good enough. That sounds reasonable to me, so I think I'll start out with the PS3IRX1 for $35 and use it for awhile to see if I'm really annoyed that there's no "power on" capability. If turns out annoying, I'll sell the PS3IRX1 and upgrade to the PS3IR-PRO BT... I think.

Didn't read the whole post but here is what I did..
To turn it off: program a macro that says
PS button

I think if you are playing a game you need to add a few steps but you get the picture?

LOL, actually I haven't bought the dongle but I have the macro ready to go!
I need to get around to it but I guess it hasn't been that big of deal with netflix to turn off the PS3 after since I have get the BR out anyway.
Let me know if you get one so I don't get a crappy one.

OK. after a crap load of reading and surfing I end up with this option:
IR4PS3
this guy ships either an IR shell ($40 + shipping). You rob a part from an existing PS3 remote and marry it to the kit, or a complete and tested kit ($70+shipping). His instructions are on utube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgfJAKEhZy4 or goto utube and search for IR4PS3.
Lot's of rave reviews about the service and working product. documentation and instructions he supplies is perfect. ON/OFF works too! I contacted him this evening and he's shipping tommorow.
Oh, and the device is register in the logitech database for those that have logitech universal remotes.
His contact is IR4PS3@hotmail.com if you are interested.
