My Sony 1041Q has developed a problem. On three occasions now, after being unplugged, the projector will not power on again. However, it seems to come back when I try it again a day or so later, with no signs of anything being wrong.
A bit more information:
- Projector has had regular (almost daily) use for ~ 1 year, and hasn't been moved recently.
- I always leave it with the main power switch on, and turn it on/off with the secondary switch under the lid.
- Our area has had its fair share of dropouts/brownouts, but none that I remember while the projector is running.
- It has been colder than usual here, and the projector is on the floor.
- When the projector fails to turn on, there are no sounds, no lights, and no spinning of fans that I can see.
- Plugging/unplugging the power cord, cycling the power switches, etc, will not revive it
- It has never failed while in use.
Has anyone seen this kind of issue with one of these old Sony units? I haven't yet taken it apart to wiggle connectors or check for poor connections, and it might be hard to trace down since the problem is intermittent...

Haven't seen this with a projector yet but I have lot's of old VCR's that do this. It seems to take a day or so to get the capacitors to respond. Check the capacitors in general to see if they are puffed out, leaking etc....

Thanks for the tip. I checked all of the capacitors I could see, and none were showing any signs of distress. The power supply doesn't have a cover, and everything on it looked normal. I put a bendy flashlight through the holes in the shielded parts under the lenses, and all the capacitors there looked OK as well.
Any other ideas?

Dont laught, I have repaired once mystery shutdown problem on Sony 1031 that shutted down after while (5-30 minutes) Culprit was ON/OFF switch (not that main powerswitch on powersupply)
But still i would take powersupply to closer inspection, solderpoints, caps ect.. |
Hey it just struck me as funny but you're right. Never over look the obvious.
