|

I'm looking for a tuner to run my 4100. I mainly use the PJ for sports and nature shows. I was told a Direct TV RCA DTC100 would connect, but have read some things about it having 540i and 1080i and switching to them and causing some visual problems. Also heard a Samsung 165 or 360 will connect up, and wonder how well they will work? Also wondering how much trouble it would be to connect a DVD ? Right now just a progressive one, but have to think about later.
I have the PJ running off an analog tuner card in my PC, and was wondering if I should go with an HDPC tuner, or if an HD tuner box would run through it if it wouldn't chop the resolution down? Trying to figure out what going to HD is worth to me?

Most of the OTA tuner boxes out there today are 480i only. I just went through this in the last month or so.
I bought a Samsung DTBH260S OTA tunner and a PHD-205 tuner. The samsung doesn't have RGBHV output just component and HDMI, it worked great with the HDFury but seems to have a green cast over the whole picture.
The PHD-205 has RGBHV output via HD15 VGA conector. It works great with my Samsung CRT monitor, Phillips CRT monitor and my Viewsonic CRT montor. HOWEVER. Acording to what I have read the PHD-205 has a sync issue on the HD15 port. I can tell you that the Box1020 won't sync to it at any of the three resolutions 480p, 720P or 1080i. Just the Box1020 doing that right now but that's how I run my RPTV with a gamma boost.
If you have any more questions feel free to post.
I have never run the old Samsung combo Sat/OTA tunner's but I do remember seeing someone sasy that you had to make sure the OTA part was setup while the box still had a sat card in it. So if you do buy one make sure to ask the seller if the OTA tunner is set up.

Samsung sir-ts360 works great as a tuner and a cheap scaler. It can output 720p or 1080i through the rgb, so all you would need is a breakout cable. I run my regular dvd player into it with component to upscale. When I had my ecp-3100, it worked great, and I kept it in the system when I upgraded to the Barco. As Jeremy says, you need to get it with the card to set it up and switch it to OTA or cable. I believe (not 100% sure) that you don't need the card after setup. Also, if you get it off ebay and it seems dead and only clicks repeatedly, just leave it plugged in overnight - it will work in the morning.

Yea, it's a 4100.
I don't know a lot about these things, and hadn't looked into things for a few yrs, so bear with me.
Thanks for the tip about the sat card. There are enough complications, and wouldn't need that.
I didn't want to invest in a Fury at this point, since I'm not sure what I might want in the future, and just wanted to get HD OTA for now, but as good as the PJ will work. I won a SSung 260 on Ebay last night, and then I found out I would need the Fury, so gona see if I can cancel it.
Thanks for the info.

I have a 15VGA/5BNC cable. That's a breakout cable, isn't it? Good that I can run the DVD into it. So you are still using the 360 with the Braco? Thanks about the sat card.
Thanks guys...

asking on Ebay about a RCA DTC100 that some said would work, the seller said it wouldn't receive the New HD stations, the ones in Mpeg4. Know anything about them, if they would be OTA or premium cable ch's or what? Does the 360 get everything broadcast OTA?

MPEG 4 only apply's to the new satelite service. If they tried to chage the OTA stations to Mpeg 4 from Mpeg2 there'd be an uprising. It took them about 20 years to decide on Mpeg2 then another 15 to decided not to decide on a format. That's why there are '18 types' of ATSC telivision signals. Plus the FCC had to pony up $40 a household x2 for converter boxes. Of course the Samsung doens't qualify as it doesn't have a 'CH3/CH4' output. All the other converter boxes that do qualify for the $40 coupon don't have high def outputs.
And yes I do remember reading about the SIR 360 that you can set it up with a card and once you have the OTA tuner set up you don't need the card anymore.
As for the Samsung '260. You don't have to have an HDFury, you could go with a Kimcoder RTC2200 or a Box1040. They convert component to RGBHV for your projector. You can always add an HDFury later if you find you need one.

Jeremy had said there was a green cast using the HDFury with the Samsung 260. Couldn't that be a problem with other combinations with them?
I was reading your post in email, and the link didn't show there. I couldn't find anything on a search of the 2200 or 1040. Have any info on the 1040?

Hi, the green cast isn't just with the HDFury ( the HDFury doesn't have a green cast at all ) it's that particular tuner box even when using the component outputs. The video outputs on the Samsung 260 all have a green cast too them. I thought it was just the projector I was using but it has it on 3 other displays I've tested with.
See the links in my last post. for the Kimcoder and the Box1040. I've fixed them. Not sure what happened there....

found info on the 1040 Lite in Carl's newsletter. Looks like it is all the 4100 needs. I'm getting a crash course on this stuff.

Ohh yeah, I forgot about the 1040 lite. That makes more sense for a 4100 for sure as 1080i will be the best highdef resolution on that projector.
So he has the Sir 360 with remote and card? Better Google to see exactly how that's setup. I've never done one.
BTW I think you meant Curt's newsletter right? I don't know any Carl's

Oh, Curt. I thought he said his name was Carl.)) I had a bad injury from chemical fumes 20 yrs ago, and make a lot of mistakes. Had brain and all over damage, like memory, muscles, vision, and all, so forget things easily, and hard to move the heavy pj's. Quoting helps me a lot, so I don't forget what was said. It's a bitch since I used to be pretty capable, and had excellent vision, and used to build and fix lots of my stuff, and still try to, and why the weight and complexity of the pj's didn't scare me, but everything is a struggle now, but not gona give up what I want. Did someone correct the subject line, from 410 to 4100, or did a 0 stick? )
Yea, I look for the most performance in things in case they may have some benefit now or in the future, but know the pj just goes to 1080i. I read that very few pj's can do 1080p. I don't know about cable, but all my local stations are 720p, or 1080i. I wonder if that's as high as they will go, or more in the future. Haven't checked, but guess Blue Ray does p.
Yea, the guy said he found the remote, and has the card. Pretty sure that one has the manual, but would have to check again to be sure. What do you mean about finding out how the 360 is set up, how to use the card to do it, or something else?

getting confused with the 1020, 1040, and 1040 lite(?), and 2200. Besides the lite having a 1080i limit, are there any differences between them, do they all have the gamma boost? They talk about adjusting the gamma, but don't see a knob/control. I better write this stuff down, or I might have a brain blowout.))

I pick up about 5 or 6 OTA HD channels. I think that's almost everything in my range, at least with the cheapo antenna I'm using. I use it as a regular cable tuner also, to upscale SD cable (I'm too cheap to pay the cable company for an extra HD box). It has three coax inputs - satellite, cable, antenna. The setup takes about 2 minutes with the remote, and you can download the manual at http://www.directv.com/learn/pdf/System_Manuals/Samsung/Samsung_SIR-TS360.pdf
The vga/5bnc is the only cable you'll need to get video to your projector. Obviously, you need a separate solution for audio. If you end up getting the 360, I think you'll be happy - it's a great little device.

I don't think getting around things is being cheap, but being creative. javascript:emoticon(' ')
The 360 is sounding good.

lets see if I have things right. The Samsung 360 will run my pj without the add on boxes, just the BNC cable I have? I read one is going to be stopped. Is that true and any idea when, and I assume there is no rush to get one of the others. Do I have it right?
