I am considering making a hushbox for a PG Xtra, and am looking for anyone with experience and can offer some advice.

I cannot run ductwork to the box without major effort, as the ceiling joists run the wrong way to evacuate air to another room. I am thinking about attaching a a plenum to the top of the PJ as I have done seen for XG's. The plenum would have ~ 200 CFM fans blowing air into the void between the sheetrock covered ceiling joists.

I would open a vent or 2 in the same void through the sheetrock 5-6 feet away to allow the warm air to exhaust back into the room. The hushbox would basically cover the whole PJ pretty snugly- allowing air to enter only at the front around the lenses.

Whaddya think?

First question--a PG does not make near the racket of an XG. Is it really worth the effort to you (yes, a hushbox will make fan levels lower, but the PG can pretty much go unnoticed)?

If you add one single resistor, to one single fan on the XG, then the XG is about the same as a PG, or a G70, or every other CRT I've heard.

And yes, a PG needs a hushbox. It also need more fans than NEC put in it - some on the deflection heatsink, and it also needs an extra heatsink and fan under the baseplate, opposite the C and F drives.

I sit about 30" directly under the PG, and although the noise it is not a complete nuisance, a hushbox would definitely make me happier if I can manage to do it right. I am always distracted during low volume scenes, so if a day or two spent camping in the workshop will fix this I am willing to give it a shot.

Has anyone here ever done something like what I describe with a plenum/hushbox on a PG? I have seen examples with an XG, and have searched a bit, but haven't found any PG hushboxes out there yet..

It looks like I will be a pioneer on this hushbox project- I will post again when when I have made some some progress.

My hush box exhausts straight to the room. It is uber quite, quieter than my HTPC at the moment.

Afryia,

Where does the air flow into your box?

Afriya- Very nice.. what fans/controller did you end up using? I also am interested in the airflow path.

Thanks

I sit under my PG and I don't even notice it anymore. I agree, you can really hear it in quiet scenes, but it's nowhere near as loud as people made NEC's out to be. I actually like the low hum. I find the high pitched whine from my buddy's digital way more distracting.

Cool project though. Keep us informed! Thumbs Up

Dan,

Be sure to take some pictures as you progress on your hushbox, I'll likely be making one for my G70 and would like to see how others are building theirs.

Dan, plenty of others have made hushboxes for PGs - search AVS (+archives) as well as here.

You certainly aren't the first, just that most don't post anymore.

For the box air comes in around the lens opening. Dido for the G70 air is sucked in around the lenses.

Air flow is front to back just like the PJ.

I use a PC fan controller from Scythe and two Scythe fans. There is a 120V line level thermostat to turn the fan controller on and off at a set temp. The controller also has 4 temp probes to monitor various temps.

You might be able to get away with just a barrier between you and the PJ. Something to deflect the noise.

If anyone wants to check out the box my dad and I made you can look over here http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1027039 on AVS Forum. I have been meaning to start a thread here on Curt's site but it was just easier to keep track of things in one forum. The hushbox stuff is on page 2.

Not NEC but you might get some ideas.

Air circulation is completely isolated from theater room and no loud duct fan used.
Two 75CFM fresh air fans in wall are connected to Barcos thermistor controlled fan system.
