Tinker Bell BD is not quite up to Pixar level animation, but certainly the best looking computer animation to come from Disney and still very good looking. It is also better than most Disney "direct to DVD features" and the "embrace who you are" message is fairly well done for the target audience.

Dave, it didn't come with access to any sort of online or DVD version, did it? I was just at Best Buy yesterday and picked up the DVD instead of the BD so I could load it onto the AppleTV for living room viewing. I figured for my little girl, it was more important that she could view it when she wanted, instead of having wait for the special time with Dad all the time to watch in the theater.
Damn, I wish all BD's came with a compressed version for iPod, AppleTV, media server, etc.
Sleeping Beauty has a downloadable version that you get with the BD, I believe - I wish all kids movies were that way. I want the BD, but I NEED the DVD.

I agree. It's not like Sony isn't flush with all that monopoly money they could be using to advance/mature the format with.

Not that I saw. The BD does come with BD-Live interactive features though.
Yes, with HD DVD I really hated the combo discs (i.e. "flippers"), but with kid's movies, I kind of like them.
Oh well, I'm not worring about it that much. With used player prices falling and such, I plan a BD player for the living room within a few months. Heck, I may end up with a combo room, so all the non-display equipment will be the same for both display chains--actually kind of nice in one regard.

I have it on order... will be a gift in my daughter's stocking this Xmas.
Tinker Bell (Walt Disney) Video: 5/5 Audio: 4.5/5
| Quote: | The Video: Sizing Up the Picture
'Tinker Bell' looks fantastic on Blu-ray. Disney presents the direct-to-video release in 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video (at 1.78:1). The encode is flawless, with the meticulously-rendered CGI and bold, bright colors offering a wonderful high-def image.
A direct digital-to-digital transfer, there is not an imperfection to be found. The image is highly-detailed, with every last fine texture visible. Black levels and contrast are pitch-perfect, with even the darkest areas of the picture revealing the most minor of detail. The sense of three-dimensions is terrific, with the "picture window" effect on full display. Ditto the color palette, which is wonderfully bubbly and clean throughout. The transfer is always razor-sharp, and there are no compression issues or apparent artifacts. 'Tinker Bell' is easily the best direct-to-video presentation I've yet seen on Blu-ray.
The Audio: Rating the Sound
Almost on par with the video, this uncompressed PCM 5.1 Surround mix (48kHz/24-bit) is first-rate. Disney has certainly spared no expense with 'Tinker Bell,' and this arguably raises the bar for audio presentations on direct-to-video features.
Nice and expansive, 'Tinker Bell's wholly studio-constructed soundscapes are lush and robust. Dynamic range fully extends itself from the highest highs down to the deep, tight low bass. Though not an action film per se, the surrounds are quite sprightly and consistently engaged, both for well-directed discrete effects as well as fairly-sustained ambiance. While I'm not a huge fan of the lightweight score by Joel McNeeley, it is also expertly blended into the mix. Dialogue sounds well-balanced, too, with no words lost. 'Tinker Bell' may not have as memorable a soundtrack as the true Disney classics, but it's certainly impressive for a direct-to-video title. |

I ended up getting this one in DVD instead of BR as well, as the kids wanted the option of watching it in the playroom.

SC | You can't afford $200 for a BD player in your living room? How sad.

Where in my post did I mention anything about not being able to afford a BD player for the living room, Wan? Are you having trouble with reading comprehension? I said I wanted to be able to load the movie on my AppleTV and a Blu-ray player doesn't exactly accomplish that, does it?
I wouldn't expect you to understand because you don't have children, but after you've changed discs in a disc player the 500th time in a month, and had a few discs very nearly destroyed because a kid is screaming "I WANT TO DO IT!!!", you'll start to see the value in a media player with the movies available at a touch of the button.
Further, I've already had my Toshiba HD-A1 quit working (no doubt due to the kids pushing buttons, turning it on and off, closing the drawer with their hands, and putting dirty discs in the player). So, I'm not about to put even a $200 BD player in the living room for what should be obvious reasons.

Wan, that was my side comment about why I don't care as much about getting a DVD version anymore. SCs motivation for a DVD version is different that mine which would be existing player. I don't put movies on a server because we don't let the little one watch that much TV or movies, so a DVD player is not a hassle for us and it is positioned high enough to be out of reach for the little one.
If she watched more, I'd definately want to go SC's route of having a movie server.

Reminds me of an event. Back in my college days (mid-80s) I worked for a movie rental/TV repair shop. One day guy brings his VCR in for repair. He tells me "It got wine spilled in it and stop working, could you look at it ans see if it can be repaired?" I write up the ticket, he looks down at it and says, "It was a Merlot--if that will help with troubleshooting."

You think that's funny.... I was at a party in high school and one of the guys was really drunk... he pissed all over the tv set (and in it). I've never seen anyone collapse as fast as he did.

I've been around friends with little boys--hell, THEY are the devil. After a few of those experiences I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOOO happy I don't have a boy!

I have one of each! I get the best (and WORST) of BOTH worlds!!!
I can say, in all seriousness, they both have their good and evil sides - at least, mine do.
Just wait until the boys start showing up when she's a teenager, Dave. I can't even COMPREHEND how I'm going to feel when that starts happening.

Dave, that's a nice idea, but "nerdy" is in these days. Being smart and nerdy IS cool. Your daughter will probably get more dates than if she were average. It seems like everything that was uncool when we were kids is now cool and a lot of stuff that was cool when we were kids is now uncool.
I can't even imagine how I'm going to deal with the boys. Now I know what some of my girlfriends' dads went through when they were dating ME.
Karma is a bitch!!!
