Would it be enough to damp the mounting of the fans to get them silent enough (and is there just a little benefit of replacing them with papst?)
Just wondering while my 3 tubes are out and I could reach the fans from the tube side (instead of via the outer plate)

Arno if you replace the fans make sure they have the same air flow, you can just use the rubber fan mounts and it does help a bit, and line the side walls in the fan bay with acoustic foam. I also lined it with dynamat. Replacement fans can be tricky as most spin faster to get more air flow and are 12 volt, so you would need to lower the voltage and then lower it further to get the speed slower but still keep the same flow. I measured this in an ingenious way, i cut a strip of paper, before i took the PJ apart ,to measure the flow of original fans by taping the strip at one end on the cover of the HDM and FCM having the paper go over the exhaust holes for the heat sinks. Whn the PJ on I meassure the deflection of the paper over each hole. then i took the PJ apart added the new Thermaltake silent cat fans and measred the new deflecton not screwing anything pernmanantly so i could remove it all to lower the fan speed till i got the same deflection of the paper. once that was found i put it all back together.

Hello
Belly fans cannot be accessed from the bottom; there is no room for tools under there. Unless a fan has failed, there is little benefit in replacing them.

I don't know whether this statement is true generally, but I did mine because it was so loud my wife complained about the noise level overpowering quiet sceens in a movie.
When Mike Parker came over to my house to provide some technical assistance, he commented that I had the loudest Marquee he had ever heard.
