I Just took possession of a mint Barco Data 808s. I've never owned a Barco and I'm still trying to learn the menu. After doing a very quick setup, I'm having an issue with the very edge of the left side. It's cloudy looking, There is no clear distinct line where the image ends. It just kind of fades away towards the end of the image. The internal test patterns are fine.. All the tubes are mint. The signal/DVD is working fine.
I know it will end up being one of those "Oops, I should have thought of that" moments but I can't figure it out. Everything else, including the top, bottom and right sides are fine.
Also, Is there a way to find out the tube hours and not just chassis hours? The reason I ask is because I thought this projector was brand new by it's appearance. There is not a speck of dirt on any of the fans, power supply or leads.. Nothing. It looks like I was the first to open it up. I was therefore very surprised to see that it has almost 6000 hours on it.
Is the hours counter counting when the PJ is in standby mode? or just when it's fully powered on? If the fans were gong for 6000 hours they would certianly show dirt and grime, would they not? The total lack of dirt on the fans (or anywhere else) as well as the overall like new condition, suggest to me that the projector must track hours while in standby mode?
After firing it up, I am convinced there is no where near 6000 hours on the tubes, they are the sharpest 8" tubes I've ever seen, Sharper and brighter than my G70 without the slightest trace of wear.

I call BS on this statement. THe G70 must not be set up properly. I've seen buckets of BD808s, and while they are great sets, they are not as sharp as the P16s in the Sony.
THe set must have been installed in a clean a/v room, left in 'set on but no pix displayed' mode. There is no tube hour meter.
Are you overshooting the tube face maybe? Do you have the contrast modulation board installed and enabled? Both those will cause pix fading on one side.
The hour meter only runs when the set is turned on .

I'm not overshooting the tube face. I'm unfamiliar with the contrast modulation board and what it does. I assume I can check in the service menu? I'll give it a shot and get back to you. Thanks.

The 808s used Sony tubes and they get very soft with age.
When I retube a 808s. I rewire the neck card and put in P16tubes.
you have the change the front hardware as well.
After this conversion the 808s is an amazing set. Will be sharper than a g70.

Aren't EM-focus tubes supposed to hold focus with age? Or are we talking about much smaller amounts of defocus than with ES, relatively speaking?
I'd love to see some test pattern photos of 808s tubes vs. p16s. Or maybe not, since I've got the 808s tubes myself, with several thousand hours, and can't afford to retube.

Sounds like picture left edge is too close to raster edge...
Have you adjusted picture to center of rasters horizontally? Hphase adjustment is for that, you need to set contrast to 10 and brightness to 80 to see raster behind picture. After Hphase adjustment you have to move raster back to center of tube face using normal raster centering.
If it's not possible to move picture inside raster, you need bigger porches from your source. There must be few mm of unused raster on left and right side of picture.

Data 808s use same Panasonic tubes what 808.
