I really have to replace the 120mm belly fans in my 4600HD. One of them is getting loud. Have we settled on a decent, reliable and quiet fan for this purpose? I'm also considering changing the mounting method as the originals are bolted directly to the case. I've seen foam and rubber isolator mounts. Has anyone used these? Space is not a issue.

try to find a fan with the highest cfm, with the lowest RPM, and a very important thing many dont look at is the pressure they produce measured in H20, i think its the amount it deflects water, not sure what distance they use from fan to water but my assumption could be wrong, i used the thermaltake silent cat fans form Directron. I had to add a resistor to my 12 volt step down power supply i built to slow it down some more i think i had it at 9 volts for a nice flow. http://www.directron.com/a2329.html

Also if you want to test how much air flow you existing fan has and want your new fan to match Find a spot where to fan blows up out of the case and tape a piece of paper on one side so it falls over that outlet of air, turn on the fan and measure the papers deflection, Try to get you new fan to match that deflection as it will be the same airflow.

120mm states 19db for 44cfm if i remember right.

i want to get the 92mm version for my psu but they are available only overseas and would be way too much $$ to geth them here.

anyone have any experience with the enermax magnetic bearing fans ?

i'm using the ENERMAX MARATHON UC-12EB ENLOBAL BEARING FAN, 17dBA, 44cfm... can't hear em. Mounted them with the little rubber isolation mounts. Had to have a buddy build a little starter circuit for me, the Barco start voltage is too low to start them every time, but once they are going they work just fine.

what pj did you mount them in?

i measured the opening of the marquee8000 and its just at 120mm so im thinking i might have to shave the fan casing.

120mm is standard size for the barco 1209s. I also removed the rear mounted remote control for increased airflow, (opens up a large hole in the exhaust area of the case) And I'm leaving the outer cover off during the summer months because it is in a loft over the garage that has little insulation and gets quite hot up there even without the pj running.

If they were bolted directly to the chassis you might find the rubber isolators very easy and very quiet. It really doesn't take much rubber isolation to reduce the vibration noise dramatically. The Enlobal fans have virtually zero mechanical noise so the airflow is the only thing you hear.

so what would a 4-fan mod look like ?

on the lvps there seems to be enough room only for 2 fans.

i was going to mount the 120mm fans on a thick piece of foam that would funnel down between the fans and the lvps chassis to channel the air into the lvps.

im also going to use the 120mm fans for intake and exhaust in a hushbox/coffeetable for another marquee8000.

I cut the fan tray as Nashou66 suggests, and mounted 4 SilenX 120 mm 14 dBA 58 cfm fans. Even though were out of production, I got them directly from SilenX in December of last year.

I wired them in series, and I hope to hell they don't fail. I had thought about trying to wire in a warning light, but didn't get around to it. The fans are brand new; so I'm hoping they have a long life.

I can hear them if I have nothing else on in the room.

so how do you even get to the belly fans ?

im thinking the pj has to be flipped over ?

i can see them through the side grill but cant see how to get at them.

I took the whole PJ apart when i did the HD 144 mod. While it was apart i cleaned it out really well, lined the bays with acoustic foam and dynamat, rerouted the cabling and cleaned all contacts especially grounds. The fans are under the tubes, easiest way to get them out and see how the cooling system works. Its all integral, the belly fans pull air from the side grills and pushes air up into the plastic tube covers down the neck to the neck boards and then out the back and around the back case cover over the rear heat sink. they also push air up through the FCM and HDM, this is where i measure the deflection of paper to find out the pressure it creates.

if you need to slow down the fans i used in the belly(thermatake silent cats) you need to raise the value of the 2.2 ohm resitor, i cant remeber the value, but just test till you get the flow and speed you need.
