|
|
Howdy Guys,
Just bought an NEC XG from a fellow forum member without the remote control - my harmony remote has the codes for the user remote but I can't really set it up. Does anyone have an NEC XG remote that I can borrow for a night to learn the IR codes with my harmony? I guess alternatively if someone can download the XG codes onto their Pronto and lend me that to learn the codes from that I guess that would work as well...
Thanks!
Ben

I checked there - and unless I'm completely retarded (or exhausted) I couldn't find any sort of downloadable content or anything for the harmony... I tried different models of the xg in the harmony configuration tool but none of them were any different (FYI i have an XG-1350)
Thanks
Ben

Buy a proper remote Ben.
It's really worth it.

That seems a little harsh.. The reason I bought the harmony in the first place is that the girlfriend is techno-illiterate. It's worked well for what we've used it for, and if I can avoid spending $60-$100 on a used pronto I'd like to..

Yep, once you have the XG set up, use the Harmony to turn it on and off.
But for setting it up, you need the proper setup remote. I've tried on a Pronto (for $hits and giggles), and it is impossible. All the keys are there, but it's really hard to do the CTRL+Key combos that are needed.
It's really, really worthwhile to get the setup remote.

I second this. I have a Harmony remote and while I can use some of the XG's functions with it, I prefer the original NEC setup remote for tweaking. It will save you a lot of time so it's well worth picking one up.

Thanks for the info guys - I noticed that it looks like I can use a computer to control it as well - any one have experience with that? Reason being I won't be able to buy the real remote for it until sometime mid october.. If I'll have an easier time doing the setup with that, then I'll make the cable - if not I guess I'll just tough it out till october

Ask for a loan of a remote.
Which is the proper setup remote for a PG?

You mean XG?
So I guess the original point of my post still stands - anyone have an XG setup remote I can borrow?

Looking on Ebay, looks like the Runco RC-6051 is what I need - not sure of the NEC part number.

Well, I was much too impatient so I went ahead and built the remote cable last night - works perfectly! I actually almost prefer it over an IR remote as the menus are much easier to navigate. I'm going to be running an HTPC anyway (at least for now) so it won't be that big a deal for me. I'll use the harmony for daily use and the PC for tweaking. Just in case someone is in a similar situation as me, the remote connects to the option port of the XG and not the "Remote" port - found that kind of strange..

Glad you got it going. That is strange about the ports.
