Hello all,
Thank you in advance for your help!

After a search I haven't found anyone with this problem, namely the height of the projected image is too tall when my Sony 1270Q is feed a 1080i signal via hdmi source, (doesn't matter, ps3, shaw cable digital receiver) switched through a Yamaha RV-X3800 receiver to an HDFury with power supply and short 5 BNC breakout output cable.

Using the RGB size adjustment in user or service mode I can get close before the 'underflow' limit is reached leaving the picture about half way in vertical aspect between a 16:9 and a 4:3 image. I'd say the vertical height of the signal is twice that what is should be as I sure can expand the vertical height the other way before the 'overflow' limit is reached!

Going into service mode and adjusting the 'size' parameter appears to change nothing when the picture is viewed though it sure does change viewing cross hairs. This is done while the 1080i image is being input. If I input a 480i image through HDMI the aspect ratio is correct.

Ideas?

Maybe the 1270 misunderstands the incoming signal, have you checked with the page key what signal the 1270 thinks it gets?
I think that the 1270 tries to display 1080 lines in one time, while 2 times 540 lines is expected.
My 1272 has no problem with 1080i except the wrong sync timing, I correct this with a scaler.

Hi,

I last owned a 1271 about 4 years ago so I can only work from memory.

(But I treasure the memories of my Sony 1271 naturally. Smile )

There was a common theory that the 12xx would not compress the raster enough to get a 16:9 ratio and I guess for lots of sets and sources this proved true.

I discovered a variable resistor near the G2 controls that would let you expand the raster horizontally. The factory setting was understand-ably conservative to keep you from gettng the raster too close to the tube edges which can lead to the tube face cracking.

I don't remember the name of the variable resistor off hand. I bet I can find it with a search if you want.

With my 1271 I opened up the ability of the raster to go within a hair of the tube edge at it's widest point and found I was able to get 16:9 from my sources at the time (HTPC, Momitsu)

Let me know if you want me to get the name of the adjustment I'm trying to remember. (RV104?)

Weird, Brian. I don't recall any trouble (myself or anybody else for that matter) getting the 12xx to display a 16:9 aspect source properly - regardless of source signal. On my 1271, I could even make my picture too short - well over 2:1, in fact - and I definitely never had to do any mods to the machine do so.

Ogrady, I think something is wrong with your setup, which would explain why 480i works fine. When you're source is supplying a 1080i input signal, is your raster (meaning the patterns in "TEST" mode) set up for a 16:9 aspect? If you set up the projector for 4:3 with the test patterns, (using "SIZE" control), then "RGB SIZE" won't have enough range to shrink the image back down. You have to use the "SIZE" control to adjust the test patterns for 16:9, and THEN use the "RGB SIZE" control to shrink from there.

BTW, what are you using for a screen?

Yep. Something is definitely wrong with your setup and these projectors are so flexible you shouldn't have any problems at all getting any source to display properly at 480i/720p/1080i.

First of all, thank you all for such quick responses!

After playing I think the projector is too far away from the screen, all the information I can find says it should be 124 inches distance.

My screen is 4:3 aspect 92 inch wide, (screen size 115 inches in 4:3)

I've managed to get a 16:9 aspect image with the RGB size vertically at minimum and the horizontal size extended beyond the screen thus the idea that I need to move the projector closer to the screen since I can't squeeze the vertical any more than I've done already.

A curious observation about the 'size' adjustment in service mode. I can fully crush the vertical size to minimum or expand it to max and there is no change in the RBG size adjustment range. It would be great if this did make a change! It just doesn't seem to.
