I have a Sony VPH-1292Q that has given me an error code of 08. I checked this forum and the only thing that I found was that it may be the DA board. So .. I bought a DA board but that didn't help. So I took it to a repair shop but they could not get any help from Sony but they did try to trouble shoot the projector. In the end, they thought it was the power supply and they gave the projector back to me. I bought a power supply and installed it but that didn't help. I thought that a local community college might work on it as a project but no go. So ... I asking for help. The projector has about 2000 hours on it and is in great shape. What ideas can I try? Thanks.

I had that error once. Problem was the board at the right if you stand behind it and it's on the floor. It's indicating a fault with the horizontal or vertical deflection.

I'm affraid I've bought that 1292 Embarassed Smile
It's indeed the right top board (E board) and it could be a bad solder joint.
If the problem occurs the 1292 is starting up but it stops after a few seconds.
My 1292 has had the 08 too and it some times did start when I did continue to power it up until the 08 fault disappeared.

On my E board some parts have been exchanged and it has been resoldered partly.
If you're lucky moving the board when the left hand side still is fixed with the screws could make it work again.
I haven't found were the problem is though, after moving the board and fixing the screws it's stable now.
My spare E board has the 08 problem too, maybe it is bad cable on this board causing the 08 error ....
If you move all the cables a bit you may get it running again Wink
The problem with these boards is that they're heavy and when lifted you could bend them a bit because of the not to riggid frame.

Russell,
I had a 1292 that I think had the 08 code. No one at AVS knew what the problem was. I found a company in St Louis that knew exactly what the problem was. If you look in the AVS archives there should be some info on it.

08 is vert deflection failure.

Sony made a table listing the errors.
More interesting is which boards (and connections) are involved and how to correct the failure.
I'll search on avs for this 08 error.

I have a working chassis here that I can test boards in. If you can't narrow it down, shoot me an email.

Thats right out of the 1292 service manual. Like any other error code from any make projector, once you have an idea of what MAYBE causing the code you have to trace down the source of the problem. It may not even be on the vert board, but voltage or signal used to activate vert deflection. The only magical solution is if someone said I had the same code and it was this board, you could then try that board. But it doesn't mean that ever time you get that code, its going to be the same board. Isn't this stuff just plain fun. You never know where your going to end up........ Laughing

That's the biggest problem indeed, you get a direction but it still can be something you wouldn't think of.
My 1292 is on the ceiling, hitting the top cover could make it run again without knowing what causes the error Confused
The fun thing here is that it will fire up after 10 or more retries, just like some capacitors need to charge untill a certain level has been reached ....
Shutting down with the 08 error is starting in the first second and at the end it shuts down after up to 8 seconds Rolling Eyes
When it runs finally it won't shut down, even when I've seen 3 movies in one go.

Sorry guys! I should have mentioned what started all of this. We had just started to watch a movie when we heard a muffled pop and then we could barely smell something like burnt plastic. After that, all I get is the 08 error. I have looked at most all the boards for an obvious component failure and even wiggled the "E" board and connections like Andre mentioned but no go. I could send some boards to you Curt but which one(s) to start with? I'm still open to all suggestions and thanks to all of you that have replied. More than I expected!

Do you have the fans running for a few seconds and then stop or is it nothing but the 08 error?

If you heard a pop and then had a smell, something blew, most likely a capacitor or transistor. The smell is probably still on the board so if you start smelling boards you may find it. A capacitor will be swollen or split and maybe some fluid on the board. A transistor will have a split in, usually right in the middle. The case may look pushed out or if its small it maybe split in half. Start smelling first, even if you have to pull boards to get right in there.

Oh, and because of this new info you provided, I would not attempt to turn on the projector anymore. Doing so may cause more damage.

The fans come on for about 1-2 seconds and then the projector turns off but it still displays the error.
